NW with 5 month old Please help
« on: December 29, 2010, 01:56:52 am »
Quick question I have a 5 and 1/2 month old who at this point with the help of sleep training can sleep from 7PM till about 5AM.  The past couple of nights he has been waking at 2AM due to teething discomfort.  I have given him Tylenol and than because he seems to be hungry have nursed him for 10 mins and than put him back down and he has put himself to sleep.

My question is should I not feed him?  I know he is waking from the teeth but it seems like since he is up anyway he wants to nurse I think mainly for comfort.  So should I just give him Tylenol and pat/shh, or rock him for a few so the Tylenol kicks in and than pat/shh, or just go ahead and nurse him?

Thanks for the help,
Mandi

My theory is that if he's not hungry, don't feed. But like most everything it's a personal choice :)

Agree with Jess...what you may find if you do feed him is getting into something habitual.  There is a very large 6 mths growth spurt which may seem him eating again at night anyway.  So if he can settle without food then I would not feed either.

Can you offer the pain meds before bedtime?  And then you can always top up the meds as a DF of meds before the other wears off.  It may prevent the waking altogether.

The tweaking never stops!

i have a 4 month old DD, and i find it impossible to get her to settle from night wakings without feeding her. She's still usually waking up to feed once a night, even with a DF, but if a loud noise or wet diaper wakes her, i always feed her to get her back to sleep. i don't nurse her to sleep, she goes in the crib awake, but it's the only way i can get her back to sleep. although i haven't tried any other options very hard!

So frustrating the teething kicked in last night again. Even with the Tylenol last night was horrible and tonight looks like it will be more of the same.  Just feel so bad for him I know he is in pain!
