2 sides?
« on: December 28, 2010, 12:17:44 pm »
Hi,

K have just starting feeding my DS both sides if he wants it....just a few questions...

* If i feed off the left side first and he doesn't take any from the right side, do i start with the left side or the rights side for his next feed?
If he then feeds of both breasts which side should i feed from??
* how will i fully know if 1 breast is empty before latching onto the other breast to avoid mastitis?

hope someone can advice me on theses questions

Thank you in advance :)

Whichever breast you offered last, start from at the next feed. So if you offered the right breast, but he didn't take any, start from that breast at the next feed.

A breast is never truly 'empty', because whenever you squeeze it there will always be milk available. If your baby has had a good feed from that side (you will know whether he usually takes 5 or 15 mins to finish feeding on one side) and has stopped actively sucking, sit him up, burp him, try again on that side, and if he's still not interested give him the second side.

I would agree with Anna re: swapping of breats. I found it very difficult at first to know when to switch breasts but as you continue you will get to know how your baby feeds and instinct will take over. How has it been going?
