What IS this all about?
« on: February 20, 2011, 20:53:44 pm »
So I thought this was due to D teething and feeling discomfort when lying down but it seems not....

D is 20mths old and for about 3mths now he does this 'thing' when we put him down to nap or sleep. Usual routine, lay him down and then he goes 'aaah, aaaah!'. Sometimes before I've even left the room, sometimes it  can be up to a min  or 2 before he starts. He makes the noise, I wait and see if he'll stop and settle, he doesn't. I go in, put my hand on his bum, go 'shhhh' and leave again straight away, no messing. Just to add when he calls out and I go in he's not sat up or anything, he's just lying there, doesn't move in response to my coming in to reassure him.

Sometimes I only have to go in a couple of times, other nights I'm in and out like a yoyo. some nights i'm back in as soon as I go out, other nights the calling out is several minutes apart. So no rhyme or reason to it. he also wakes usually once a night to do the same. When he does this I just reassure as before and sit in the chair in his room. in general he's back asleep in minutes. it's never the same time that he wakes each night and every few nights (maybe once a week or so) he sleeps through.

I know this is no big deal compared to what others are going through with sleeping but I just don't know why he's doing it or what to do about it! All I can think is it's a habit from when he was teething his canines.

Hi...

Is your LO crying when he makes this noise? My DS quite often makes quite a lot of noise when we put him down to sleep, it varies from him babbling to making almost a whining sound but they are his way of winding down to go to sleep. Unless he starts to cry & get upset we leave him to settle himself which he usually does, have you tried doing this?

Also as LO's get older & become more vocal you do find they start to learn to make different sounds & noises..

Do you want to post your routine so we can see if anything else could be going on?  :)

I've not left him for any real length of time. He isn't crying when he does this, it's more calling out, as if he needs to check I'm still around (I'm outside his door on the landing). If I leave him he just gets increasingly more annoyed sounding!

He's 20.5mths and routine is as follows:

A: anytime after 6 really. This morning he was chattering a bit at 6.15 but I didn't need to go get him till 6.45
S: 1pm for 1.5hours. This is a set nap time as opposed to going by A time, due to school run. Plus I don't like him to sleep too long into the afternoon, never beyond about 2.30. Bedtime is into his room for bottle at 7.10ish, I leave at 7.20ish and then we have anything from 5 mins to 25 mins of me going in and out.

Last night I had to go in every few mins (seemed to be every time he changed position) for about 20 mins. But then he slept through. there really is no set pattern to it.

Like I said I am lucky in that he is a good sleeper (finally) but it's just getting a little wearing standing on the landing every night. I used to be able to go straight downstairs after putting him down.

Your routine looks fine  :)

Could he be teething? Have his 2nd year molars started coming through yet?

Not sure if the below link will help you to get him back on track...

I'm pretty sure he's not teething, he's just got his last canine, so we're due a break!

I'm pretty much doing WIWO anyway. I tried leaving him a bit tonight, he just keeps going with making the calling out sound, gets louder and more insistent. His big brother is right next door plus he had a short nap today (only just over an hour) so I didn't want to push it. in any case i think leaving him he'd just get worked up start crying properly and i'd end up doing WIWO just more so, if that makes sense.

I think it's a reassurance thing, just don't know how to break it. I was up there 25 mins tonight.

It could be a bit of SA but he also sounds OT. The link below goes through how WI/WO can help with SA.

IMO, if you think it's an SA/reassurance issue then I would carry on doing WI/WO to help get him back on track (although you do need to do this consistently).

Do you do an earlier BT when he only has a short nap?

I'd love to do an earlier bedtime when short naps crop up but it's just impossible with his older brother around really. And me being stubborn, I refuse to do 2 bath and bedtimes!

Thanks for all the advice, I do think it's mainly a bit of SA left over from teething, as it happens whether he's OT UT or bang on track. So I'll just keep with WIWO till he grows out of it.

Last night was the second night in a row that he slept through, great! And he's just gone down for a nap and I only had to go in once before he settled right off!
