cranky after nap
« on: February 13, 2011, 01:24:55 am »
We finally got our 16 month old to (mostly) STTN a few weeks ago, using WI/WO. He's waking earlier than he used to, around 6:30 (sometimes earlier) rather than 7 AM like he used to. I've been putting him down for a nap before or at noon. He sleeps 1-2 hours, but ALWAYS wakes up cranky. He wakes up crying, throwing himself around when I pick him up. All afternoon he's cranky, only being happy temporarily when distracted from his crankiness for short periods of time.

Could he be still tired after his nap?

What can I do?

Hi there,
Yes it sounds like he could still be tired. At this age 2 hours is probably optimal, any less and he may be getting OT. Having said that some are fine on less but the cranky mood indicates he needs more sleep.
Is he teething? If so I would try some meds before the nap and you may also find shortening the A time slightly may help, particularly if he is waking earlier than he used to.

My guess is still tired as my son gets like that if he has been kept up too long in the morning.  My boy is 18 months and the magic time for his nap is around 11.40am/11.45am.  On the days I get him down after 12pm, he can wake a bit 'out of sorts' but just putting him down 20 mins earlier makes all the difference.
