Thanks for all the help! I am going to try shortening the morning nap and moving the pm nap forward. Yesterday, she took one morning nap at around 11 (that was after 30 mins of struggling). I tried to get her down for a pm nap at 2 pm, but she was resisting it and I didn't have the energy to make it happen. So, I kept her up and she didn't seem tired until around bedtime. She went down easily (yay) but still woke up 4x last night (boo!). We'll see what happens today with this new plan. Thank you again for helping me through this! I am also pregnant with #2 so my patience and energy are pretty shot.  :(

Congrats on the pregnancy!  I was also pregnant with DS2 when DS1 was this age, so I know how tiring it can be.  Hope you get things sorted out soon.  Keep us posted!  :)

Thanks, Martina! Yeah, it's a challenge to say the least.

As an update, this morning, she started to fall asleep in my arms (we were just walking around the house) around 10:30. Yet, as soon as I put her in her crib, she's awake?!? After ten minutes of a struggle, I just took her out, assuming that perhaps I was wrong and she's not really tired after all? Someone. Please help. This is torture!

What time was she up this morning?  She probably wasn't 'properly' tired.  A lot of LOs will get sleepy at a certain point, but just not really tired.  Do you ever get that mid morning or mid afternoon lull, where all of a sudden you feel sleepy but then you're fine?

Actually I have had a similar morning with my 9.5mo!!  So I'm not sure what to tell you as I am at a loss myself.  He usually goes down just fine, but has been sleeping better at night so all of a sudden is not tired enough to nap, but I still feel like he is tired.  :P

Just wondering is she walking yet, or is there anything else going on developmentally?  That is part of our issue, as DS2 just started walking so I think he is unable to settle down to sleep because he's too excited about his new skill.  Maybe your DD has something similar going on?

She was up at 8 am, so maybe she really isn't tired.

She isn't walking yet, but she's close, so maybe that's it. (sigh) So many variables!

I try later for an early afternoon nap and let you know how that works out.

thanks again!

Since my last post, I have dropped the morning nap and moved the pm nap up to 12:30. While the switch worked the first couple days, today, it didn't. My daughter went to sleep in my husband's arms while he was watching tv, and when he went to put her in her crib, she refused. OK. So, I gave her lunch, played with her, and then attempted to wind her down around 12ish. Again, she attempted to go to sleep in my arms, then when I put her in her crib (to prevent her sleeping in my arms), she woke up.

Her bedtime has also been moved back to 9 (from 7: 30ish pm) to prevent the fights. She falls asleep easily, however, I am worried that this is too late. (sigh) Especially considering that her one nap only lasts for two hours. Please help!

Sounds like a lot of OT going on.  The 2-1 switch is very frustrating for this reason!  The one nap tends to work well for a few days, and then OT accumulates and sets in which can cause problems.  Bedtime is definitely way too late.

Can you try doing two naps every few days to make sure she catches up?  That is often what lots of moms will do during this transition.  Very rarely can you just go straight to one nap without issues, it usually takes several weeks of going back and forth between one and two naps before an LO can really handle one nap without getting too OT.  It is a very difficult transition.

I think today it sounds like she got her second wind when your DH went to put her down, and then by the time you tried again she was way OT.  Do you have a wind down for her before naptime?

Maybe you might want to pop over to the 2-1 support thread to chat with other moms about their tactics for the transition:

Thanks, Martina. Yeah, I suspected OT. It's so confusing. I'm going to hop over to that thread now and see if it helps any. Thanks for the suggestion!
