Conflicting advice for constipated 6m old??!!
« on: February 21, 2011, 10:05:08 am »
Hi,
My lo has always been prone to a little constipation. I've read the laxative foods thread but it seems a little conflicting. Is there any food which is sure to help my lo poo better?
Any help please!

Have you tried prunes or pears?

Stay away from bananas for sure, and maybe best to avoid cereals as well.

Also look into giving your LO probiotics if you don't already.  And of course when in doubt, don't hesitate to ask the doctor.

The thing is it is all trial and error really as what works for one won't work for the others. Digestion is actually a pretty personal thing.

We had a terrible run of constipation with Megan a month or so ago.

Banana was a definite culprit, and pre-made baby fruit pots. Otherwise it wasn't really any particular foods that helped or eased it - more her gut getting used to solid food.

Making all my own fruit purees helped (and I do put pear in almost all of them), only giving banana as a finger food, increasing her fluids in her sippy, and oatmeal (rice is a nightmare!!).

Oh and lentils are the BEST!! I put a bit in most of her savoury purees now.

I used to put 1 oz of prune juice into one (and only one) of my 5.5 mo bottles a day.  Now that she has been on solids for about 2 weeks now, I haven't had to do that for the past 4 or 5 days.

To echo PP's, prunes and pears are a good idea, and use bananas and cereals in limited quantities, if at all.  In a few months, even that precaution might not be necessary.
