brand new to this!

My son just turned 12 weeks old.  He was such a great sleeper at night - sleeping 12 hours straight, which was obviously wonderful.  He has been more difficult lately - when we put him to bed he has been waking up every 20 minutes or so.  Once he is officially asleep he is waking up around 3 and I feed him.  His naps are awful as well.  Instead of 45 minute naps I get 30 minutes.  I sometimes hold him for a two hour nap just to get him to sleep well...I know - not a good habit!

Anyway, I don't know where to start and need some help.

If I do the wake to sleep method do I do this for all naps?  Do I start with just one nap?  If he wakes at 30 minutes, do I go in at 20 minute and do wake to sleep?

A few more questions -

-Do I try to JUST go in and rub his cheek (or some other variation) and then if that doesn't work I move on to something else?

-If I have to shush/pat how do I do this when he sleeps on his back?
