45 minute nap question
« on: March 03, 2011, 02:55:37 am »
Just wondering if anyone knows why this happens...  My 3 month old DD is a terrible napper and wakes up after 45 minutes into every single nap.  She doesn't wake up every 45 minutes at night, so she can obviously make it through the transition of sleep cycles on her own.  So why can't she do it during the day?  She doesn't wake up happy and well rested, I end up rocking her to sleep twice for each nap.  I feel like all I've done for the last few weeks is try to get her to sleep over and over again.

Unfortunately for us, their little brains learn how to do night sleeping quicker and better than they learn day sleeping  :(

It is frustrating but in time it will improve, lots of us here have found that  :)

I remember going through this same exact thing and wondering why my DS could make it through the night and not naps.  The PP is right - they learn night sleep first and then day sleep.  It was hard, but it does get better! Eventually, your DD will start taking a few longer naps here and there and then will probably get more consistent.  Just try to stay as consistent as possible with your nap time routine and eventually try to move to shushing/patting to sleep and it will resolve itself. Hang in there, I know it can be frustrating!

Thanks, I will try to do the shh/ pat more.  So far I haven't been successful unless I rock her until she's almost asleep then put her down and shh/ pat to finish the job.

I rock my LO until he's sleepy, then put him down. I know it's AP but I am happy with it and he is happy.

Sometimes it doesn't work and I have to let him settle himself down, so I don't think in our case it's a prop  ;)

I may live to regret it when he's older but he still seems so tiny and young at 5 mo..  :-*

I have exact same problem ! I was just going to post the same question? Does PU/PD really work with extending the naps? My son is 3months and 1 week. Wakes ofter during night as well, just not every 45 min. He used to have one 5.5 hrs or 6 hours stretch, but not anymore....

It sounds like we are in the same exactly place!!!  She used to have a 5.5 hour stretch and now is down to 3.5-4 hours at most!  After how today went I am considering trying the PU/PD too.  I just started reading about it tonight after I finally got baby to sleep.  I wasn't sure if it was okay to do at 3 months or if I should wait until 4 months?

Hello there!! My DD did the 45 min. nap thing for a while too - I won't tell you how long.  ;) Some of it is just a waiting game until they "learn" to sleep longer. But a few things helped me:
1. The sleep mods. will prob. say not to do PU/PD before 4 months - just too early. They won't understand.
2 .Also, some people have great success with extending the nap but a lot of us don't. I appreciate Tracy's "3 day trial" theory- whatever you try be consistent for at least three days. But if they still haven't caught on and it's just getting frustrating, you might just need to adjust your expectations and find a way to work around it.
3. I finally figured out that my DD was actually OT. I was trying to fit her into a 3.5/4 hour routing when really she needed a much earlier morning nap. I wish now that I had given myself "permission" to play with the routine. You don't want to put them down so early for the first nap that it just becomes an extension of the night, but tbh my DD liked a 2-2.5 morning A time for quite a while. I didn't realize it was "OK" for the A times to be so different. She would do a very short morning A time, a much longer middle time, and then about a medium A time before bed.  ;) All that to say that every LO is different so give yourself permission to play round with things for a bit.
HTH!

That's great advice from Jaci  :)

Also bear in mind with 3 mo's they are probably having a growth spurt / developmental leap so that will disrupt day and night sleep for a while..

Stick with it, things will get better, especially if you stay consistent and watch the baby for tired cues!

I wasn't great at that so I wrote down all the EAS times for 2 weeks and figured out from the average of that what his A time was naturally  ;)
