I need clarification
« on: March 09, 2011, 18:31:00 pm »
I hope I'm posting this question in the right board...

I need to know how to add more calories during the day for my breast fed 5 week old DS in order to eliminate his NWs. He feeds for about 15 - 20 minutes each feed in the day and is content after that. Anyway, I know BW says the best way to eliminate the night feeds is to add more calories during the day. As much as I'd like to do that,  how do I get more in him if he doesn't want any more? We're on a 3 hour EASY and doing a dreamfeed anytime between 10 and 11, but we still can't get rid of that 1am - 2am feed. When he wakes up then, he feeds lazily for about 10 minutes before going back to sleep. I'd really appreciate any insights.

Thanks!

 Hi,

I think at 5 weeks old your LO is doing BRILLIANT to only be waking once after the DF!  ;D If you are BF'ING it is very difficult to add calories as you dont know how much they are getting at each feed. Its not uncommon for BF bubs to need a NF for many, many months. My 5 month old still has a feed at night.  ;)

Totally agree with previous post. 1 night feed at 5 weeks is fantastic! Wish my lo did that! At such a young age they will still need the calories at night. Sorry I know that's not the answer you were looking for!

I should have been more clear... we have 2 - 3 feeds a night. What I was hoping to do is get rid of that 1 or 2am feed so we can get a longer stretch of sleep after the dream feed. I know this is still good compared to what some families go through, though. :)

 Hi hon,

I think right now when your supply is establishing you just need to run with it.The prolactin hormone is at its strongest in the wee small hours and any stimulation you get at this time sets you up for good supply in the future.

Is he going straight back to sleep afterwards?

Hi Emma,

On good nights, he does go right back to sleep. But sometimes he decides it's more interesting to hang out. :) It's just a bit frustrating for me because I know from the way he's eating that he's not hungry. I tried giving him a paci first, but he cried so I thought it must be hunger, but then he ate so slowly and lazily that I knew it really wasn't. That's why I'd ideally like to stretch out the time between his night feeds.

Ugh. This is my DD right now to a tee.

If he goes right back to sleep afterwards then at this point feeding is your best bet. Its quicker than any other route atm! I personally think with a 5week old there isn't much else you can do really. Those first few weeks are one big GS.

 ((((((hugs)))))))
