15mo old manipulating with lovey
« on: March 20, 2011, 19:30:02 pm »
Our DD has had pretty good sleep habits since about 4-5mo of age when we used the PU/PD and shush/pat methods to help her learn independent sleep.  She is now almost 15mo and about 1 mo ago, after returning from a week long vacation and as her 1yr molars have started causing problems, she has started having more trouble going down at night and often has 1-2 NW.  Her main problem is that she just wants us in the room with her.  We don't have to talk, comfort her or anything, just be present.  I am gradually working on that by sitting closer and closer to the door each night.  However, when she wakes in the middle of the night, she stands up, starts screaming and throws her paci and lovey out of the crib in order to get me into the room.  I've waiting a few minutes to see if she'll calm herself down, but without that lovey, there is no hope.  At the beginning of the month, I could just walk in there, give them back, then leave.  Now, over the last week or so, I have had to do the same thing that I do at bedtime, sit in the room until she falls asleep and have been gradually moving closer to the door.

What should I do about this lovey?  I've gotten her hooked on it and now I feel she's using it to get me into her room in the middle of the night.  I am trying to just give it back with as little interaction as possible (at the beginning was none, now I feel it's getting worse).  Please help, any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

DS went through a phase of that and I would just return, give it back, and leave again. But he did go down independently without me in the room otherwise.

It did pass after a few weeks. Personally I think it is one you just have to ride through as taking the lovey and paci away from a toddler is a bit mean as they are genuine comfort items.

But if your situation is also about independent sleep you may need to have a consistent approach at all wake-ups - including the night ones - and do GW for that as well if that is what you are doing.

I'm afraid I know nothing if GW as I always used WIWO with DS. He is furiously independent and would never settle if I was in the room anyway.

Hi

My DS is nearly 15 mths old & has been going through a very similar phase (dropping things from his highchair/cot etc). It's definitely a developmental thing & I agree with Liz that it will pass & he will soon get bored of his new skill & move on to the next thing.....

If GW is working for you then I would stick with it.

Does this help?

Absolutely, thanks soooo much!  The top two molars just popped through today, so I hope this is all a phase or due to teething.  I will just deal with the lovey issues with as little interaction as possible and stick to GW for the rest of our issues.  Thank you for the advice!
