Learning to Nap in own crib
« on: March 28, 2011, 17:33:38 pm »
I have a 7 week old LO and I am beginning to start BW.  I understand the schedule but need help with the naps.  Should I put my LO in the crib for each nap?  Should I swaddle at each nap?  Right now he naps in the swing, car or in my arms.  Sleeping on me he goes 2 hours easy.  I tried yesterday in his crib and he cried like crazy...and then gave up and only napped for 15 minutes.  If naps are in the crib how long does it take for the baby to settle into the schedule and not cry each time?  I think I am scared to let him cry.  Any nap advice would be so helpful!

You don't have to let him cry - shush/pat if baby starts to cry after being put down.  It will usually calm babies that young quickly.  Certainly want to swaddle for naps and BT until 4 months, maybe longer depending on your LO.  Mine is swaddled with one arm out at 4 1/2 months (naps and night).

It's okay to start the transition to crib with LO drowsy when put down, as opposed to fully awake :)

And remember that fussing and crying are different!  There is also a mantra cry (I have never figured my baby's out though!) that will actually mean baby is trying to soothe himself and you doing anything during this cry will cause further problems for baby falling asleep.  It's supposed to be a rhythmic sound - almost like a moaning type cry.
