Nana is confused about 3 naps
« on: March 28, 2011, 04:46:05 am »
I seem to be getting more and more confused about this 3 nap a day thing. I thought I understood it, but since my LO is an early waker its not working out. And things are starting to get worse. right now our naps look like this..

Wakes at 5:30 (any info on how to get him to sleep later or even stay in crib longer?)
1st nap 7:30-9
2nd nap 11:00-12:30
CN 2:30-3:15

This schedule puts his BT at 5:15, which puts him waking at 4am. So would it be better to let him have 4 naps a day to bring his BT to about 8pm? Then his schedule would look like this..

Wake at 5:30
1st nap 7:30-9
2nd nap 11:00-12:30
3rd nap 2:30-3:30
cn 5:30-6:15
BT 8pm

How old is your LO? Is he STTN?

At 5 mths, their A time should be between 2-2.25. You can try stretching his A time. You can increase by 5 mins per day. At late 5 mths they can even do 2.5 hrs. It seems to be that your A time is a a little short.

Naps at this age should consist of 2 1.5 - 2 hours and a CN of 45 mins. It seems your LO is taking these naps. The issue is the EW that forces you to jump start early the routine. If I were you, I will keep him up till the normal time of his first nap. That is what I do what mine wakes up early. Regarding BT you need to experiment his last A time from CN to BT. This greatly varies. Mine is doing 2 hours but some ladies in my birth clubs are doing 3 hours, so you need to know your LO.

I am envious that he is STTN :D. I am no way near that.

ok, I'm confused. His awake time is from when he wakes till he goes to sleep right? If so then he is awake 2 hours, actually most times its almost 2.5 hours cause it takes that long to go to sleep. His naps are not at a regular time because we have suffered so much with him being OT that I refuse to keep him up longer than he wants. But what I really need to know, would it hurt his night sleeping if I gave him 4 naps in a day? I would really like his bedtime to be later than 6-6:30 so he might sleep later in the morning

Yes A time is from the time he wakes till he sleeps. In reading your EASY, I see it only as 2 hours. If his naps are always irregular and short, there is no harm in giving him a 4th nap. If they are not taking the full naps, you can always do more naps. I see your proposed CN from 0530-0615 with BT at 8pm, this will work.

Let us know how it goes.

Is he crying when he wakes at 5:30 or is he happy? Have you left him to resettle himself? It's entirely up to you but I would suggest rather than altering the routine around the 5:30 waking work at preventing it via your usual methods of settling back to sleep - shh/pat etc. It just seems that adding an extra nap in is a step back as soon enough he'll be looking to drop his CN anyway so if you can stick to 3 naps a day and it'll be alot easier in the long run. On the days that DD wakes early I sometimes let her nap longer at her 1st and 2nd nap to take her later into the day....so would he maybe nap for 2 hours instead of 1.5? In our household EW mean OT baby from the day before. HTH :)

Thank you for the replies. I know that short naps are from baby being OT. And yesterday we had a huge problem with that. We had to drive around for 3 hours so that baby would sleep for 2 hours. And that was after trying to get him to sleep in his crib for an hour. Anyway, he did end up with 4 naps yesterday, 2 of them were catnaps and boy what a difference. He didnt wake until 7 this morning. Thats the first time in 5 months he slept that late. But now the problem seems to be diapers. Yesterday and today when I got him up, he was soaked and the bed was soaked. And we have just started sleep training about a week ago so he's not big on resettling himself yet. But he's working on it.  Todays schedule looked like this for him..

Woke 7:00 unhappy due to sleeping in a pool of urine
E- 8am
Nap1 9-10:30
E-11:30
Nap2 12:10 (he was begging to go to sleep)-2:10
E-3:00
CN 4:30-510 (we were out and he hates to sleep in the car)
E 6:30
BT 7:15

So today was a really good day. Now to see what happens tomorrow

Where do you live Nana?  I am a huge Pampers fan but recently switched to Huggies Overnights for bedtime - HUGE DIFFERENCE!  I am in Canada...

That does look like a really good day...looks like that 4th nap got you back on track! Well done you! I'm dealing with an OT baby today and it's only 8 am and she's already in the midst of taking her morning nap...poor thing has bigger bags than I do! On the nappy front we ended up stepping up to the next size when leaks started to happen as even though the smaller nappies fitted better they could not hold what she was producing :)

I'm in USA. The bigger size diaper works. I was amazed to wake up and not find a soaked crib. :) BUT now the problems are starting up again. He's now waking at 7am (woohoo!!) BUT he gets tired after 1.5 hour A time first thing and only takes a 30 minute nap. Then he stays up for 2 hours and again a short 30 minute nap. He has stopped self settling for naps. I know he can because last night he woke me at least 3 times from him talking to himself in his crib. But he never cried so I never went to him, I just kept falling back to sleep (hope that doesnt make me a bad mom/nana). For the last few days we have resorted to driving for 3 hours to get him to nap longer. I'm lost as to why he can resettle at night but not in the daytime.
