10 week old Baby waking every hour after 1am feed...HELP!
« on: April 12, 2011, 09:15:25 am »
DS isn't sleeping through the night, but I'm ok with that. He goes to bed around 7:30 and gets up around 1:30 for a feed. He'll then wake up almost every hour to the minute until 6:30. When he does get up between 1:30 and 6:30, I usually I'm able to soothe him while he's still in bed by shh shh sounds and patting his back, and will fall back asleep within 2-3 minutes. At 5:30 though, shh shh doesn't work, and I ususally have to get him out of bed and soothe him back to sleep. Only lasts about 3-5 minutes. I'm wondering why he's getting up every hour since it's not to feed....... Any ideas on how I can get him to sleep undisturbed??? I was wondering if it's his diaper since we recently stopped changing him at night unless he's pooed. Should I change him during his 1:30 feed??? HELP!

(((Hugs))) that sounds rough- you must be very tired out!
What's his sleeping like through the day? Breast or bottle fed? Does he seem to have wind? ANy hint of reflux? Does he take a paci? Is the room temperature not too cold? Is he swaddled? If not, what does he wear for bed?Cloth or disposable diapers?

Sorry for questions-may lead us to an answer!

For now, it might be worth experimenting and changing at the 1.30 feed to see if it makes a difference.

Take care- and try and sleep yourself in the afternoon!

He's not a very good napper during the day.  He'll nap at around 8:30, 11, 2:30 and 5ish but only for about 30-45 minutes each time.
He's EBF as he's REFUSED the bottle  :( He's also REFUSED the paci
Once in a while, wind seems to be the problem, but not most of the time. No reflux issues...
Room temp is usually between 19-21°C
We swaddle him as he still wriggles quite a bit without being swaddled. Finally, he wears disposable diapers

Ok, few things...

have a look at the sample routines on the FAQ in the EASY forum as they might give you an idea of how long a LO should be awake before having a nap- you may need to tweak a bit to get some better naps in the day. AT this age, maybe try a nap after 1 hr 30 I think.

the fact your DS is waking so frequently implies that he is either a bit uncomforatble (wind/reflux etc) or he is hungry. SO say if he feeds at 1/30 and is awake again at 2.30, maybe try to feed again and see if that helps. there is a growth spurt around this time so taht could be it. Make sure he is getting good feed during the day- sometimes oyu have to feed in a quiet place so they don't get distracted by the world!

have you thought about or ever done a dream feed at 10pm ish to get a longer stretch of sleep before first wake?

at this age, my DD was mostly waking twice after a dream feed at 10pm. Fist wake at 2 ish for BF then at about 5 ish- again for BF.
It can be harder to get them back to bed after an early morning feed as the hormone levels have risen and so they are not quite as sleepy... but they still need more sleep! Try to keep it as dark as possible and not change at that feed, no talking etc.

My DD also refused a bottle and so we missed it out and went straight to sippy cup at 6 months. SHe couldn't manage paci either but I am quite grateful now as ones less thing to worry about!!

It's a bit of trial and error really.
Good luck!

Ruth

Thanks Ruth, I've tried DF once or twice with no luck, but I'll give it another try...  He sleeps so well between 7:30pm and 1am, I just wish he'd do the same after 1am... I'll try different things to see what works

Not everyone finds the DF suits so don't worry if you don't! THat is a lovely stretch of sleep for 10 weeks so by all means enjoy it!
