what do 1 hr naps mean?
« on: April 07, 2011, 17:50:16 pm »
DS is 17 weeks old today and we have recently conquered the 45 minute nap monster.  However, he is now having naps of an hour, an hour and ten  or an hour and fifteen minute naps.  Is he possibly UT now that he is better rested?  Or is this OT?  Thanks!

I would guess that is UT. How is his form when he wakes?

He is generally fine and a pleasant little guy, but I do notice that he can't last quite as long between naps.  A "good" nap is 1.30 and then he can have about 1.45 A time.  With an hour or 1.15 nap he can only make about 1.15 or maybe 1.30 A time.  Is this the time to start stretching A times since he is getting past the 45 minute naps?  He is really refusing a 4th nap so I am struggling with making these three naps last all day.  We usually end up having way too much A time after the third nap, but we do a good, calm wind down and he seems to be ok with it for now.  I am wondering if a 9, 12:30, and 4 nap schedule would be good?  I know it's better to follow their cues, but it can be hard to sit and watch him as I also have DD who is 23 months.

Just a thought- do you have a video monitor? Every time I put my 4 month old down to sleep, he went to sleep right away and I used to think he was taking 1 hour naps, but then when I checked the monitor I realized he was just sleeping 45 minutes and laying awake for 15 before starting to talk to himself!  Still stuck on 45 minute naps. How did you get past it??

I actually think that seems ok. Are you feeding every 4 hours?  At 17 weeks alot of babies are on two long naps and one catnap so not being able to get that fourth nap in makes sense.

How was today?

We have really got a consistent AM nap, usually almost 2 hours.  The second and third naps vary from 1 hour to 2 hours each, depending on A time and how much sleep he's already had for the day.  I really need to push him past 1 hour 40 min A time because our day is too short.  He tends to wake at 6, then our day is like this:

6:15 - wake and eat
8:00 - sleep

10:00 - wake and eat
11:40 - sleep ( this one varies from 1-2 hours)

12:30/1:00 - wake and eat
2:15/40 - sleep (this one varies 45 min-1 hour)
4:00 or before - wake and eat

This leaves us with a long A time in the evening as bedtime is 6:45.  i really don't want bedtime earlier...I am trying to get him closer to a 7am wake/7:30 bedtime so our family can have a life.  I wonder what would happen if I just picked a day and changed his schedule?

Have you tried extending the second A time to 2 hrs? think this may do the trick...worth a shot...

sounds like you are doing ever so well - I remember your 45 min naps - im not doing so well nowdays with my naps but hoping that I can get a routine like yours sorted one day!!

I would push that second A time out like Annetter suggests to 2 hours.  Hopefully LO will manage it ok especially after a 2 hour nap.  HTH x

I just remembered that for me 1 hr 10 naps used to be OT ...hopefully its a simple case of UT for you though so you can stretch the day out...

fingers crossed ;D

The last 2 days we have pretty much stretched all A times to 2 hours, getting 1h 30m to 2h naps, plus a catnap!  Yippee!!  Fingers crossed that it continues...Our next issue is night wakings.  He is waking for his DF (even when he has a big feeding right before bed).  If he sleeps til 3:30 or 4, he will have a quick feed and back to bed.  If he wakes earlier for a feed, then he wants to be up at 5:30am...not happening!  I've heard the 5:30 wakeup can be related to OT.  I guess maybe I'll post this on that board.  Thanks for all the support ladies!

well done you!!! amazing stuff!!

just thinking maybe could you be sneaky and wake him at 4am for a bit to do another quick DF just to get the right wake up so you can get him used to the new routine - cos OT builds up over a few days and Id hate for you to get stuck with EW - then once hes done a week or so of good naps then stop the 4am feed and let him wake when he needs - by then he may decide not to bother anyway!!

If you've only been getting good naps for 2 days it may take a couple more days to follow over into nights.

I tended to feed after 5am to get DD1 back to sleep to get a proper wake up time.  No way i could start my day at that time and still be pleasant!

Great work on the naps!!!!!  Well done you xx
