Night waking 8 month old finally slept, was this a fluke?
« on: April 14, 2011, 07:23:19 am »
Hi

Im new to posting but have been reading the site for some time!  My 8 month old has for the last 2-3 months been waking 3-4 times plus per night, in fact she had never slept right through until last night!
Finally we had a nights sleep, bed at 8pm, one little squeak at 2am but then back to sleep and through to 6am...heaven!
The only thing is Im not sure if this is down to a change in the day or just a fluke never to happen again!
Normal day is:
Up at between 6 and 7am
Bottle 7.15am (4-5floz)
Breakfast 8.15am - weetabix/ready brek with 2-3floz of baby milk
Lunch 11.30am - 7-8 cubes of chicken casserole, lamb hotpot, lentil stew, veg shepherds pie (protein and veg recipes from Gina Ford), 1 cube of pear and apple puree or banana, 2-3 floz of water
Bottle 3-3.30pm (5-7floz)
Tea 5.30pm - 7-8 teaspoons of baby rice/porridge/readybrek OR potato and veg (I normally make porridge with her milk if she hasnt taken her bottle well in the afternoon)
7.30pm-7.45pm last bottle (5-8floz)
Bed 8pm

Naps: (1) 9.30am - 10.30/11am (this used to be a 40 min nap but has recently become 1-1.5 hours)
         (2) 12.45 - 1.30/1.45pm
         (3) 3.30/4pm - 30 mins (this one doesnt always happen)

BUT Yesterdays difference was in the naps:

Nap 1: 10 am - 11.30am
Nap 2: 3.45pm - 4.15pm

So same total sleep but no lunchtime nap - she just didnt seem to want or need one until late afternoon?

So my question is would the 10am change in the morning nap time have made a difference or was it perhaps the fact that she didnt sleep again after this until 3.45pm?
Or was it maybe the gaps between sleep in the day were all 3.5-4hours?

I can encourage this pattern again today but I read that the lunchtime nap period is very important so dont want to start ruling this out?

Any thoughts or advice would be really apreciated!

Thanks!

It's pretty normal for an 8 month old to only need 2 naps, so I would try to stick to what you did yesterday. Only difference would try to get her to bed a bit earlier because an 8pm bedtime from a 6am wake up is a long day!

Thanks Anna for your reply!
She was at a 7pm bedtime before daylight saving time change, and was waking at 5.30/5.45am - so we were glad to have the change to more often a 6.45am waking and 8pm bed, should I try move back to 7 or if she wakes closer to 7 is 8 bedtime ok?
Ive also done the 2 nap day before but she still woke constantly at night, but the 2nd nap was maybe too early then? as was normally 1.15 to 2pm or so.
For her age is it the awake times in between naps thats maybe making the difference to the night sleep?
Sorry for all of the questions..new to EASY method but excited that it may help me and my daughter, and of course Dad get some sleep!
thanks again!!

Last two nights not good but not sure if it's now mainly teething as there is a little tooth just surfacing on the front.  Last night was bed 7.30 awake 9,10,11,12,4, up at 7 but I only had to pick her up once and I put some teething gel on her gums which seemed to help
The night before bed at 7.30 woke at 9 for few minutes then 12 until 2 am!
There seems no logic no matter what I do! I am still trying to stick to awake tome of 3-3.5 hours though with a longer stretch before bed as this seems to suit her during the day
She also seems to only need a total of 12-12.5 hours of sleep per day in total as she is a very happy baby during the day and first thing in the morning. I just hope things settle down when the tooth is fully up? (until the next one comes!) :)

Teething will mess things up for sure. Have you tried giving her pain meds to see if it helps?

Yep giving her calpol or nurofen baby if she seems to be in pain but she still wakes two to three hours later and you can't give another dose so close are there other pain meds you would recommend over those?

No but you can double dose with them, ie give Calpol and then 3 hrs later give Nurofen

Success! So far 3 nights of proper sleep, woke once one night but last two not at all 7.30 to 6.15am! I am starting to feel a but normal again so I hope it lasts! Thanks for all the posts of similar stories and things to try as I think it may have just been some nap tweaking in the day that helped and also maybe a little that a mini tooth has arrived finally !! :)
