Mixing BM and Formula?
« on: April 27, 2011, 20:20:30 pm »
YDS was a preemie and spent a long time in the NICU.  I pumped exclusively for him for three months during his hospital stay (and for a while thereafter).  During his time in the NICU, he spent ten days only taking hindmilk to kickstart some weight gain.  (It worked!)  In the meantime, I froze the foremilk...I wasn't going to waste a drop!  Now, he's home and doing 50/50 formula/bm every day.  I have all these bottles of foremilk, and I'm wondering if I can mix them with formula.  I'm not talking about putting the powder right in the foremilk; I know that you can't do that.  But, can I put ready-to-eat formula and foremilk in the same bottle??

Hi there,
You can mix BM and formula in the same bottle but just remember that you shouldn't shake BM or overheat it!

I can't see a reason why not :) You would notice if it was making him more gassy or if it affected his tummy any other way, and then you could just decrease the amount of foremilk in each bottle until it is tolerated. I agree, don't waste that liquid gold ;)
