Problems with short afternoon nap
« on: May 02, 2011, 16:53:42 pm »
My LO is 7 months. We were on a good 4 hour EASY from 5.5-6.5 months. He was taking 2, 1.5-2 hour naps day plus a catnap.

At 7 months, we dropped the catnap because he was spending more time crying than napping. The afternoon nap is getting shorter and shorter.
Here's our current schedule (when he's at my MILs), help me get back to longer afternoon naps. The morning nap is great, so I don't know if extending morning A time in the morning will help anything.
E 7am Wake, breastfeed
   8am 4oz solids
S 9:15 nap -1.5-2 hours
E 11am
S 1:15-1:45 normally cries a bit to get to sleep (this nap has been getting shorter and shorter)
E 2:30p
   3:30 or 4 4oz solids
E 5:45-6p breastfeed when I get home
S 6:45p 6-8oz bottle, sleep (wakes up 1X through the night)

I've tried extending his afternoon A time, but it doesn't seem to help. The other problem is that I leave for work at 11:15, so if I extend the morning A time, how can I get him to take his long nap when I'd have to wake him up to leave. Thanks in advance!

Some info for you:

6.5 - 7 months 2.75-3 hours. Some are getting more.
8 - 10 months 3 - 4 hours. Some are getting more.

I think he's UT looking at your routine.  I would probably aim for first nap at 9.30am and let him sleep 1.5 hours if that will give you enough time to get out to work?  SOme LOs like a shorter first A time so that may work well in with your schedule.  I would then aim for the next nap 2.75 hours after he wakes up and see does that help?  If not you may need to go to 3 hours after wakening from the first nap.  It will take 3/4 of being consistent with the increases to see if it will affect the nap.  If he is sensitive to OT you may need to increase 10-15 minutes at a time.
