waking earlier please help!
« on: May 03, 2011, 13:16:02 pm »
My daughter is 10 weeks old and beginning at 4 weeks she has been sleeping 5-6 hours at night and then after feeding her she would go down for another 2-3 hours. Over the last week or more, we have transitioned her out of her carseat (was sleeping there as we thought she had reflux and the doctor wanted her upright) to a pack and play. Now she is sleeping 3-4 hours at night and will only go back down for another 1-2 hours. I know the transition may effect her sleep but for how long? Also, because she was in her carseat she was unable to get out of her swaddle. Now she fidgets so much she is able to get out of it which is part of the reason she wakes up so soon. Any suggestions for how to get her back to sleeping 5-6 hours? Also, when she wakes up we try and calm her down and get her back to sleep without feeding her as we know she can go longer but it takes so long and she is so fidgety that its time for her to eat again....I am trying to get her back to sleep without nursing her so she doesn't develop an association. Any help would be appreciated!!

Hi there, has the doctor ruled out reflux then?  If she's that fidgety it could be discomfort.

Hi - yes. we originally thought she had reflux but we put her on Zantac and there was no change. She does spit up a lot but it doesn't seem to bother her...I guess she is just a spitty baby. I am wondering if we should stop swaddling her since she ends up getting distracted trying to get out of it which ultimately wakes her up....she likes to get her hands out and suck on her fingers....

She's pretty young for weaning the swaddle but maybe she's ready to have access to her hands a bit.  The reason for swaddling is to calm the Moro reflex which is where they kind of scare themselves with their own hands and startle themselves (it's also known as startle reflex). If you leave one arm out it may help her to stop struggling against it), she may also find her hand for self-soothing.

That said, Zantac is always a doctor's a first line treatment for reflux but o would say maybe more than half the time it does not help.  It did nothing for our boy, our lives didn't get remotely better until he was put on a PPI like Prevacid.  Is she fussy during or after feeds?

No she isn't fussy during or after feeds...thats why I think we ultimately ruled out reflux as the spitting up never seems to bother her...we will try leaving one hand out of the swaddle. i am hoping she works through this transition from the car seat to the crib and/or pack and play soon as it is effecting her napping as well as she is constantly overtired now...
