Question about dropping the catnap
« on: May 20, 2011, 21:37:40 pm »
DS is 5.5 months old and for the last week or 10 days has been really giving me grief about his CN.  It takes 20 minutes to put him down most days - he is out right away for his other naps (good self-soother) and used to be this way for the CN.  Also, he used to sleep for 45 minutes and now it's usually 30.  I know the general idea is to wait until they completely refuse it for a week, but I am starting to think it might be getting close to time to drop this nap.  Anyone BTDT and have advice?  Also:  He is having NWs (usually exactly at 2:30am and 5:30am), is bottle-fed 4 6-8 oz bottles/day plus a 3 oz DF, I have just started stretching his A time past 2 hours (he has done fine with 2 hours 10 minutes the past couple days), and he is an angle/textbook baby.

When my daughter was about this age she did the same thing.  We had a few days where she fought it, then would take a catnap on day 3 or 4.  It seemed not worth the effort and we couldn't seem to get to a week where she refused it altogether.  She is also angle/textbook so we just stopped that catnap.  No phasing out.  She was fussy during that time for about a week or so and then she got used to it and was fine.  The bonus during this time is she went to be super easy at 7.

I have the exact same story as above.  I just forced the dropping of the CN because it was causing more trouble than help at about 5 1/2 months.  We had a tough week to 10 days for adjustment but we made it and now naps and bedtime as so much easier!

i am having the same issue over here with my almost 5mo DS.  he takes great naps (except when he is going through a developmental leap)...today he took a 1.5h nap in the morning and 2.5h nap in the afternoon.  the only way i can get him to take the CN is to either pop him in the stroller and go for a long walk w/DD (great exercise for me!) or if the weather is bad pile both kids in the car and go for a drive.   ::)  he is just a tad too young to force the phaseout but the CN is killing me!  i say get rid of it if your DC is old enough...otherwise it is just a pain!

Chicagomom: For sure your LO is too little for dropping the CN still... I would give it a try once he hits 5 1/2 months though... have you tried just pushing BT back until that time to help with getting him down easier at night?  Or you could drop the CN and keep it super low key with an earlier BT for a bit.
