Single side feeding for 3 month old
« on: June 09, 2011, 01:13:32 am »
The last couple of days I have sore nipples again, which I haven't had since the first few weeks.  I think my supply may be a little bit low these days, I may be getting my period or something, and the sore nipples could be just that my LO is sucking harder to try to get more milk.

But I also wonder if single side feeding might be the cause.  As they get older, and then need 4, 5 or more oz per feeding, will one boob still suffice or should I switch to the other breast?

I single side fed for about 3 months, and then also seemed to notice that maybe DS2 wasn't getting enough, so I kept him on one side as long as possible, and then offered the second side. However, I have noticed that if he hangs on long enough, I may get another strong letdown, so your body may produce enough for your LO.
Your DS is also probably due for a growth spurt, so he just might be sucking extra hard to get enough milk :) and your body will adjust. I don't think it's a bad idea to offer your LO the other side, just make sure he's been on the first side long enough to get the hind milk.
Anyway, those are my two cents - maybe someone with more authority can offer you more sound advice :)

I agree with Katia (though I'm certainly no authority, just another breastfeeding mama like you!)

Dylan was generally a single side feeder, but I always offered the second side 'just in case'.  He took it fairy infrequently, but often enough that I always checked.

I don't think it's a bad idea to offer your LO the other side, just make sure he's been on the first side long enough to get the hind milk.
That's the key, really! :)
