Shorter A times and longer Naps when teething
« on: June 07, 2011, 22:06:17 pm »
Hope I'm posting in the right place! :)

My DS seems to need shorter A times and will sometimes take mega naps while teething. Do other mums find this is the case, and if so do you wake your LOs from their long naps at say 2hrs, or another time to keep them on track...or leave them be? How shorter A time is too short, even if your LO is teething. Do you follow their cues or cut down the A time by x minutes?

Would love some feedback as I am feeling a bit lost as to if I should wake from naps, or if I am putting DS down too soon/late when teething.

Thanks!!!!   :-* :-* :-* :-*

I have just left him to sleep for his AM nap (for which we went down for early as he was miserable as) and he has been sleeping 2.5 hours. I think I will wake him as its 12!!!!!! I just know last time I woke him when he was teething he was grouchy pants all day and tired till his next nap. 'sigh'

I know this will lead to EW...but we get them anyway so I figure it cant do much more damage...or can it?

Teething is just awful! I find my DS needed more sleep (and more cuddles :) ) when he was teething and it didn't do any damage to our routine. However, we didn't ever struggle with EW, so I'm not much help in that department! Perhaps you could cut his pm nap a little bit short on the days that he has a really long am nap. He might get a bit more grumpy toward bedtime, but they're grumpy when they're teething anyhow! Are you medicating at all?

Hi Nikki! Thanks for replying :)
It is awful isn't it :( And I am a total sook. In saying that its a lot less awful than when DS was a lot smaller and his reflux was not controlled....so we are going ok.

DS DEF wants lots of cuddles and doesnt know where to put himself. I am medicating. Ibuprofen at night and Pamol during the day. I tried not too...but DS was a mess and totally beside himself, plus he wouldn't sleep so pain relief it is!

DS does like a long AM nap anyway, and if he is going to do a 2hr for one of them, it is usually the AM, followed by a 1-1.5 PM. Its so hard as when I do wake him from his 'teething' mega naps he is miserable. But he also sleeps for soooo long! Yesterday I woke him at 12. I figured the morning was gone so he had to be up. He had slept over 2.5 hours and also slept in. He had a total of 2.5 hours up all yesterday morning.

But in saying that...He only had a 45pm (woke with pain) was a tad OT by BT and slept well. (6.30-5am in cot on and off till 6am) So it does sound like your suggestion (which I did by accident) works well! Its so hard as last time he did this he did 2 X 2.5 hour naps and then woke at 4am bright as a button.

The other thing I am doing (and I have never done in the past) is feeding him for comfort before his naps when nothing else will settle him. He generally starts to fall asleep and I try to stir him going into his cot. I hope this doesnt mess up his independent sleep for naps...He self settles every night for bed though.
