Is it time to drop to 2 bottles?
« on: June 18, 2011, 19:27:16 pm »
Hi just a quick question, my DD is currently changing from formula to cows milk. We are on 50/50 in the bottle now, she won't take it from a sippy cup but that is another story. All is going well and she takes the full 7oz in her 7am bottle no problem. What has started happening is that she is only taking 3-4oz at 2.30pm and 3-4oz again at bedtime. Now I don't think it is to do with the switching to cow's milk as she still has all of her 1st bottle fine and has never seemed to notice a difference at all. She has quite a lot of yoghurt, cheese, milk in cereal etc in the day too. So do you think I should try dropping the 2.30 bottle and replace it with a snack? What worries me is that she still takes the full bottle on the two days she is in daycare... no idea why she doesn't with us!

I think it is likely time  :). I wouldn't worry about daycare - she will just increase her solids to compensate.

DD is on 2 bottles now - she dropped the am one at 9 mths (NO idea why - she just wouldn't drink it and would wait for her breakfast instead - and had her bottle before her sleep instead). When she dropped to 1 nap at 11 mths she dropped to 2 bottle - one at 11am and one at bedtime.

Odd I know.

But the main thing is that she is old enough to need to push solids over milk anyway so I would drop to 2 bottles  :).

I agree with Liz! Around 13 months my DD started refusing her breakfast so we actually dropped to 1 bottle and milk in sippy cups during the day, so the milk that was in the first bottle bacame a mid morning milk drink with a snack. It took a couple of weeks for her to drink a decent amount from the sippy, but she was soon draining them! They only need around 14oz of dairy to get their needs met from 1yr and that does include the dairy in their food.

OK thanks ladies, do think I need to drop it as her BT bottle was 1 oz the other night!!! Do you think this routine is ok?

7.00 - 7oz bottle.
8.30 - breakfast
11.30 - lunch
2.30 - snack (instead of bottle)
5.00 - tea
7.00 - 7oz bottle.

Also what sort of things would you offer as a snack? I was thinking fruit and some rice cakes or something like that. Would that be enough?

The routine looks fine to me. What time does she nap?

I think fruit etc are fine for snacks, if you are concerned about dairy intake you can offer chunks of cheese or a yoghurt too and a drink of milk in a sippy!

Thanks Laura that is great. She sleeps from about 12.00 - 2.00, so that is why she has lunch a little early. Milk in a sippy... hmmm.... if only she would take it! I try everyday and as soon as she realises it is milk and not water or juice she won't drink it. She drinks water or juice from her sippy or a sports top bottle like a pro during the day and with meals. But if milk isn't in a bottle she doesn't want to know. No idea what to do about this really. I guess I will just have to keep trying hey?

Odd isn't it?! My DD just will not have it, even as she is crying and whining for her breakfast as she is hungry. Silly girl!

Yes I would have thought the am one would be the coziest! But it is like she just wants to get up and start her day!  She does enjoy her bottle before her am nap though:)
