Bad nap at same time
« on: June 21, 2011, 20:56:53 pm »
My lo is 5.5 weeks old and I have been struggling with her naps. The last few days I have had problems getting her to nap at the same time each day. This is what today has been looking like:

E/A- 8
S-8:55- 10:55 in swing (2 hour nap)
E/a- 11
S- 12-1 and then again on and off 1 until 2 (for a total of about 1.5 hour nap)
e/a- 2
s- not happening! apop by holding/rocking as putting her down results in waking up quickly very fussy. sshh pat works briefly.
this was the same yesterday but then the next nap was good between her 5 feed and 8 bedtime.
we do a df at 11 and a nf around 330-430. we recently increased food as she was waking early for each feed. she has between 4-5 oz per feed. Any ideas why this particular nap is so hard? Eventually she'll fall asleep being held but ends up only being about 30-45 minutes after all the attempts to get her to sleep fail.
It is now 6:02 and she had her 5:00 Eat and we are trying to get her to sleep now..she is fussing again so my DH is walking her around. I think she is OT now since she didn't sleep much last nap but don't understand why I have such a hard time getting her to nap after her 2:00 feed since she is not doing a lot of A and is getting quite a bit of S!

thanks!

At such a young age I wouldn't worry even a little bit about needing to AP naps.  It is more important they get sleep than how they get to sleep or where they sleep.  So if you are finding that nap particularly tricky aim to just AP it for the meantime.

Looking at your routine it could be she needs slightly less A time at this stage of the day.  She manages a 2 hour nap after 55 minutes A time first thing and then after 65 minutes A time she has a good (but broken) nap which tells me she is making slightly OT.  I would aim to get her to sleep at 55 minutes, an hour at the latest throughout the day to stop OT from gathering.  Sometimes 5 minutes at such a tiny age can make all the difference.

The last few days I have had problems getting her to nap at the same time each day
I wouldn't worry about that.  BW is about following your LOs cues.  Does she give any sleepy cues?  THe other thing is if you get a short nap you;ll need to reduce A time even more which is so hard at this age as they are hardly awake anyways!  But don't worry if your EASY is sometimes EAS AEAS.  It will all fall into place.

You're doing great. Am impressed at your fab am naps! Not to mention your great nights!  Amazing!  Congrats on your wee bundle.  Hope you are enjoying lots of newborn snuggles x
