30 minute naps = too much night sleep?
« on: June 22, 2011, 19:34:33 pm »
Hi there,
For the past week or so, DD has begun to take 30 minute naps. You could literally set a timer because she wakes up exactly after 30 minutes! She used to do this before for some of her naps (closer to evening), but I always knew her morning nap would be at least an hour long, or if we went for a walk and she was in her stroller she would sleep much longer - sometimes up to 2 hours. Not anymore! The only thing that became different recently is that she is sleeping longer at night - about 12 hours. Before she was sleeping 10 hours. She is 15 weeks old, so I wonder if 12 hours is too much?

She doesn't wake up crying from her naps and in fact gets very frustrated when I try to extend her naps by shush patting. Yesterday I managed to get her to sleep for an extra 30 mins in her swing after battling her for about 20 mins after she woke up. I put her to sleep by shush-patting in my arms and put her down when she begins to close her eyes and then continue the shush-patting her in crib.

I read that waking after 30 mins is a sign of OT but I doubt thats the case since I put her down for her morning nap about 1h - 1h 15 mins after she wakes up (granted it takes me a while to get her down sometimes, so most of the time she will be asleep about 1.5 hrs after she wakes).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Can you please post your EASY?

I would love a 12 hour night :)
Yes usually 30 mins is OT, but can also be UT...   ::) :-\ :-*

Sure. Our EASY is kind of messed up due to short naps, and because I don't know if its OT or UT that's causing it, I try to look for her tired cues during the day...

Also, I should preface that our BT is late (as is our WU) because DD has been going to sleep veeery late as a newborn. She was only falling asleep at 2am due to colic the first month, despite our best efforts. This gradually moved down to 12-1:00am, and now we are usually falling asleep around 10-11pm. We are gradually working on an earlier bedtime, but its a work in progress..

So here's how yesterday went:

WU: 9:50
EA: 10:00
S: 11:25-12:10
EA: 1:00
S: 2:00-2:30
EA: 3:45
S: 4:00-4:30 (she fell asleep on the boob, so I put her down right after feeding because she was so tired)
A: 4:30-6:15
S: 6:15-6:45
EA: 7:00
S: 8:20 (I think this may have screwed things up, but she was tired and we don't start bath time until around 9, so I decided to put her down anyway. She woke at 8:50)
Bathtime: 9:00
E: 9:30
S: 11:00 (it took her a long time to finally fall asleep for good last night. I suspect that the late CN was the culprit. She usually goes down earlier).

She then woke at 1:00am, so I picked her up, calmed her and put her back down, then she woke at 2:40 for a feed, 5:45, 8:45 and woke up at 9:45 this morning

So today so far has been:

WU: 9:45
E: 10:00
S: 11:25-12:00

I let her coo in her crib for about 15 mins until I saw she was getting upset. Then I got her and put her in the swing where she cooed for another 30 mins or so and then fell asleep. She's been sleeping there for about 20 mins now...

So judging by this morning, is she OT or UT?? I very highly doubt that it's OT because she only started yawning while I was singing her our lullaby and she was swaddled in my arms. She went down quite easily - a little bit of grunting and protest as usual, but a minute or 2 of shush-patting in the crib got her to fall asleep...

UPDATE: She slept for about 40 mins in the swing, so I guess 1h 20 altogether for the morning, with 30 mins in between of A time. Obviously not ideal since half of the time she slept in the swing, but at least she got some rest.

She woke at 1:30, I fed, then A time, then put her down at 3:10 and she woke at 3:45....arghhh...
