I Have Double Trouble!!!
« on: July 08, 2011, 22:30:22 pm »
I'm not sure if there is some weird moon cycle or if my children are just in cahoots trying to drive me nuts...but I have issues!

My DS is 2 and he has refused a nap for the last 2 days.  I have gotten him to sleep at 630 and he has slept until 7am.  He is doing ok, but he has that wound up energy that says OT to me.

I have been trying to do his nap around 2 as that is when it was working last.  I am thinking I need to go back to 1 and try an earlier nap ???

DD is 1 (16mo) and she has been on 5-5.5hrs A since about 10.5mo (spirited)  She finally got through her molars 2wks ago.  Then last week we were at the lake so kind of all mixed up.  This week she has been going for 6hr A times, which I figured would be about right.  She had started fighting the 5hr A naps quite a bit when her teeth weren't bothering her.  Well the last few days she has only taken a 1hr-1.25hr nap and then today she took a 45min nap.

She does have reflux, but she doesn't seem like she is waking from that..normally that is a high pitched scream.  Now she is waking saying "mommy mommy mommy"  I leave her for a few min and she escalates so I go to her and when I try to get her back to sleep she gets very upset and as soon as I turn on the lights she is happy.  She has been sleeping 12-13hr nights.

I am open to any thoughts....I feel like this might be something I have to ride out, but just not sure if I am missing something.

Thanks a bunch!
Sarah

Sounds like DS is OT and I would try for the earlier nap.  FWIW we had a string of nap refusals right around 2yrs very similar to this.  I kinda panicked thinking OMG, is this the end of naps?  But it was just a blip and we got our naps back again within a few days. Like your DS, T would still do 12-13hr nights at least.

DD sounds UT, but she is doing a pretty decent A time.  What does her day look like?

I think you are right with DS.  I know he is not ready to drop the nap and I also think he is still kind of wonky from our vacation weekend.  I think I have been pushing him too long to get him to sleep at the same time as El.  I think the result is OT.  I am just thankful he is happy to do a long night as this is the first time since he was a teeny tiny that he does a 12hr night. He has just fallen comfortably into a 10hr night routine.

I don't know what to make of El.  I think it actually may be her teeth again.  They are through but I think they might still be moving in.  Either that or her canines are already on the move grrrrr!

This is what her day looked like today

She also has had a few blips the last few nights right around 930 or so at night.  She cries out for me, gets worked up, I go to her and she is back asleep in 2min.  Whole thing lasting no more than 10min.

I have thought of backing off on the A time in case it is OT, but she really does not show tired signs (eye rubbing) until 6hrs.  Also today we were in the car at 5hrs A and she didn't even try to fall asleep.  Normally before she would fall asleep if she was tired.  That is why I am still thinking she needs the 6hr A.

Oh well-I'm sure it will pass sooner than later and then we will be onto the next thing!

Hmmm, she has me stumped a bit too, because like you thought I would have suggested a bit shorter A time.  But her behaviour really does speak otherwise, and I doubt more A time is the answer.  So that means something else has to be going on, right?  :P  Well, with DS1 canines were on the heels of 1yr molars so it could very well be that.

Good luck with DS, I think that as long as he is doing great nights you are pretty safe, but keep an eye on OT and keep trying for an earlier nap until this phase blows over.
