At around 2yrs old, after bath we would let DS1 come downstairs and hang out. He could watch 1 tv show and he would get a bedtime snack. Then we'd do pyjamas and tooth brushing, some stories, then up to bed and sing some lullabies before lights out. It was a much longer and more mature type of wind down, where as before we'd whisk him straight to his room after bath and do pyjamas, stories, etc., there. We noticed this started to make him wound up, like as soon as he was in his room he knew what was coming, which is why we let him come downstairs and wind down a little more on his own time. It has worked very well for us since then.
