hiccups - any cures?
« on: July 22, 2011, 10:12:01 am »
My 7 wk old sometimes get violent hiccups which upset him, occasionally to tears. Any cures or preventative measures we can take? Normally I give him a dummy and hold him until they pass.

I buy Gripe Water. DD gets them ALL of the time. It works so fast!! As soon as I hear that one hiccup I run to her with a burpee because I know she is about to spit up everywhere! haha. I get the kind at the drug store that is called "Little Tummies" I love it! and it comes with little droppers =)

Second the gripe water! Wonderful and gentle. We use woodwards. Popping DS back on the breast used to also work...but not so great after he developed reflux at 6 weeks ::)

I haven't tried gripe water for hiccups, but I will next time. I've only used it for wind. My LO hates the taste though. I've tried Woodwards and another one, but Woodwards works much better, but apparently tastes worse. Are there any recipes for it and I could try to make my own?

Here is a link with a recipe:

It's unlikely that you will have more luck with a home made version though, they are all anise seed based (the licorice flavour)...  Have you made sure to get one without alcohol?

Woodwards has no alcohol in it :) Good idea on trying a homemade one, but Kara is right, the flavour is likely to be the same.

Apparently...and you would need to research it to confirm, some hospitals use water with something else in it to help with wind. I am thinking maybe some kind of sugar? It always confused me as babies shouldnt have sugar usually, but may be worth looking into to see if whatever it is helps :-*

We also use "baby bliss" (i think thats the name (I am not 100% if it is mommys bliss or baby")it has been my favorite so far, smells great and taste isn't bad. It can also be used for gas, colic and teething.
