Wakes after 25min-Why??
« on: August 27, 2011, 08:41:33 am »
Ds is 17weeks and is a horrid day sleeper.

Despite my best efforts to follow EASY we are struggling as he wakes 25min into his naps  Sometimes I can resettle him but it takes a while.

Yesterday went:

E 6.30
A 6.30-8.15
S 8.15-8.40 Woke crying,  I went in shsh/pt’d him until calm then left. He just chatted until about 910 when he started crying again, and I gave him his dummy and he settled and slept for 45min.
A 8.40-9.15
S 9.15-10
E 1015
A 10-11.30
S 1130-1155. Woke crying then resettled quickly with his dummy and sh/pt
S 12-2pm
E 2pm
A 2-3.45
S 3.45- 4.10 Woke crying but I pt/sh’d for 30min back to sleep
A 4.10-4.40
S 4.40-5.05
A 5.05-6.30
S 6.30 bed for the night.
E 2am

Our nights are good. After his night feed his goes down awake, no dummy and goes to sleep.  Why can’t he do this during the day.

I think the dummy is a bit of a prop. But today we were heading out so put him to sleep in his capsule before we left, and he went to sleep without his dummy but still woke at the 25min mark, before we had even left the house?

He has been doing this on and off since about 3 weeks old, but it has become a lot worse and for ever nap now.

I have tried to let him resettle himself but he quickly escalates into a full on scream.

He does have silent reflux but I am 99% that this isn’t the issue as he is otherwise very happy and the meds are seeming to be controlling it well.

I have tried putting him down earlier thinking he was a bit OT, but it didn’t seem to make much difference,  and then he only slept for 45min in total.

Does anyone have any thoughts on why this is happening and what I can do to help him out. I have a toddler to look after as well and it is starting to drain me a lot.

Any advice would be great.

I forgot to add that I have gone into his room and watched him at the 25min mark, and I have tired HTTJ but he doesn't jolt as such. Just tosses his head round and then his eyes pop open.

For what it is worth, he is also swaddled and he has white noise.

I do think he is OT there for the crying when he is waking up and the 30 min naps are a sign of this.  At 4 months it is common to pick up sleeping problems with LO's.  They are getting more aware of their environment and there is a huge growth spurt around this time.  Trying to get those naps sorted are really important.  By 5 months this is the sort of routine you are aiming for:

7:00 - wake and feed
7:30-9:15 - Activity
9:30-11 - nap
11:00 - wake and feed
11:30-12:45 - Activity
1/1:30-3 - nap
3:00-feed
3:30-4:45 - Activity
5-5:45 - catnap
6:30 bath and feed
7:00 - bedtime
10:00 - Dream Feed

A time should not exceed 2-2.5h at this age.  You are doing the right thing by using shh/pat to get him back to sleep.  Remember it is a learning process for him to self-sooth so by being consistent with the shh/pat he is going to get there  ;)

Thanks for your reply :)

I reduced his A time down by 10min this morning and he slept for 1hr, with no 25min wake up so I am thinking you are right with the OT.

Only problem is now that his A and E's are all out of wack, but we will ge there.

At this age they are very sensitive to becoming OT.  Remember that EASY is a guideline, use your LO's cues and adjust were necessary..

Good luck.  Keep us posted  :D
