Am I ready to drop the DF
« on: July 15, 2011, 21:14:09 pm »
Hi I was wondering if anyone can advise whether it's the right time to drop the DF.

Some background... My little boy is bottle fed, a big boy at over 20lb, 6months and 3 weeks, I have done DF from birth.

The details... He has always been a hungry baby and before weaning was up to 3x10oz bottles + 1x12ox (bedtime) then the DF was anywhere between 3oz and 7oz, varried daily. Started weaning at 5.5 months and now milk intake is more varriable but roughly he has 8oz at 7am, 4-6oz at 11am and 3pm, still 12oz at bedtime.  Then there is the dreamfeed... I went on holiday with lots of family around about the time I started weaning and everyone kept offering opinions; he shouldn't need a night feed anymore, it isn't right to wake a baby to feed blah blah blah.  Anyway I buckled under the preasure and started the process of dropping the DF (against my instincts!) So I got it down to 4oz over a few days.  But then I was travelling back and it was all a lot of change for LO and with all the opinions gone I decided to continue DF but have not increased the amount so he has no more than 4oz.  Occasionly he has less but sometimes when it's finished he wakes (before when I had a full bottle and let him have what he wanted he was always asleep throughout) However he is still happy to go to 7am before he feeds, though I would say he is now hungryer at that time than he was before decresing the amount.

Finally the other complication is that he has started EW (between 5-6.30) and I am fairly sure this is because he is almost ready to go to 2 naps. Def not a hunger waking, as I say he is still fine to wait to 7am.

I feel he is ready now in terms of being able to take all the calories he needs in the day as he's droped back on milk in day time. I am aware it's very much a habit for him now, on the few occasions I've been late he has woken, even though I know he's not REALLY hungry. However I worry that for me psycologically I may start to worry the EW is due to hunger, even though I know that he is EW now with the DF, I don't know, hard to explain but I know I'll worry.

So any advice?  Bite the bullet and drop it? (I would love to be able to go to bed early especially with these EW!) Wait till he is regularly taking less than the 4oz or at least seems totally satisfied by it?  Wait until the EW subside(if they do)

All advice gratefully received thanks D x.

I would wait until you have transitioned to 2 naps and see if that sorts the EWs out - at least then you know it's a routine EW not a hunger EW and you can drop the DF when he's sleeping later in the morning. If he's still EW after a week or so on a 2 nap routine look at dropping it then.

Most babies drop the DF around 7/8 months when they are well established on solids and are mostly on 2 naps by then.

That's what I'd do anyway!

Thanks for the advice, I think you are right, it'd all be too much change at one.  Will push on with 2 nap transition first. x.
