nine month old suddenly resisting naps and sleep
« on: July 27, 2011, 21:44:12 pm »
Hi, I would really appreciate some advice. I have used the baby whisperer technique with my nine month old since birth. She has generally slept very well during the night and has gone down easily for naps: the morning nap tended to be for an hour and a half but could be shorter and the afternoon nap was always shorter ..for around  30-45 minutes. She would generally sleep 7 30 pm to 6 45 am.

We returned from holidays two weeks ago and chaos seems to have struck! While on holidays she stuck to her routine and even napped in her little travel tent for 1hr and a half most afternoons.

Since return however she is resisting going down for all naps and particularly fighting me at bedtime. For the past two weeks I have not been able to get her to bed before 9 30 and one evening it was 1130. If she naps it will be the morning nap with resistance and she seems to want to cut out the afternoon nap.
.
She is very spirited and started crawling about 4 weeks ago. A new childminder spent 3 hours with her on the first 2 days we got back from holidays. She told me she had let her cry it out for 5- 6 minutes at her lunchtime nap and I am wondering is this likely to be the trigger for the sudden change? I have never let her cry it out.  I am getting very tired and I can't understand how this little baba can keep going. I would really appreciate any advice. I have tried pick up put down at naps and bed time but not sure if this is the right route to take. I also don't feel able for those very spirited screams. She has 2 teeth since 4 months and I can't feel anything else coming yet.

Her current routine(!) is looking  like this
6am-8am: Awake , milk, play
9am Breakfast
10am Nap (30 min- 1hr 15- 2hr)Resists intially
1145 Lunch
2 30 Attempt to put down for nap- refuses.
4pm May nap for 30 min
5pm Tea
730  bed time routine- resisting sleep. Gets up ...play
930- bed ...exhausted
10 15 wakes crying , settles with pick up and soother.

Sounds like it could be the start of the 2-1 switch so have a read of this first.......

If she's refusing the second nap then I'd suggest making the first one shorter and go for a short am/long pm nap.  She's got herself in an OT so needs to get out of that.  Can you APOP her nap if she's refusing it for a couple of days just to get her back on track?

She told me she had let her cry it out for 5- 6 minutes

She may be a bit off because of that as well.  Is she crying when you leave the room now?  Might be worth staying with her while she falls a sleep for a while and then doing gradual withdrawal.
