11 month old wont have nap in afternoon
« on: August 26, 2011, 15:37:46 pm »
My baby has always been on EASY but all of a sudden this last week she will not have an afternoon nap.  She can only last 2 hours in the morning and goes down no trouble.. anything from 1 to 2 hours.  Now for instance like today she woke at 10am after that nap and it is currently 4.3pm and she wont go back to sleep - i have been trying from 1.30 left her for an hour but she wouldnt go and by then she was screaming... tried her again at 2.30 and nothing! Its hard cos her sister also shares the bedroom who is 3 - please help!

I am not sure whether to try pu/pu although im not sure what that is.....
or controlled crying??

Hi Kerry,

Do you think you may need to join us on the 2-to-1 nap transition thread? It is the first sticky at the top of the Naps page. Thread #17 - loads of people talking about nap refusals and trying to extend A time so that LOs can get to 1 nap. My DS is 10 months and refusing pm naps, too. He is usually pretty good to go down in am. Sometimes he will still sleep 1 hour or more (even up to 2 hours rarely), but today and most days this week he only did 45 min and then refused pm nap. Needless to say, BT has been very early and we are also getting NWs and EWs. There are some great Moms with great advice on the other thread. I wish I had more advice to offer, but we are having real trouble over here with naps - and he is my first baby, so I really don't know what I would do if I had an older child to also deal with!

hth
good luck

Hi Kerry,

((HUGS)) this is a tough age for a lot of LOs as their sleep needs change. Mum2Heath is right, you may be entering 2-1 territory.
If you post your easy we can have a look at some ways to help :-*

Please don't leave your LO to CIO/CC, this breaks the bond of trust between mother and baby. I really do think this is just a routine issue sweetie and that with some tweaking and/or gentler sleep training such as PU/PD your LO will come right.

Have a look at these links too :)

I know, same here! I finally got DS napping well at 6 months on two solid naps and at 9.5 months he has started the 2-1 ::) That said, it doesn't mean she is ready for 1 nap, just that maybe one needs to be shorter so she is tired enough for a long PM, or BT (if your PM is capped)
It could be a phase....if you post your EASY we can have a look, it may be that you just need an A increase for now or 1 nap capped at 1hr :-*

PS...I hope my DS is still napping at 3.5 :D

haha at your DS having a nap at 3.5 years.  All my antenatal friends cant believe it either but I have always stuck to EASY even with her and routine is such a key that she still does.

Georgia wakes up then within the 2 hours it is bottle and brekkie so say 6.30-7am wake
8.30-9am sleep for an hour or two.
then activity until midday then lunch
then half an hour, hour later bottle then bed..

Yesterday after waking at 10am from her nap i put her down at 1.30 and she didnt go in an hour so i got her back up at 2.30.

Tried to put her back down at 3.30 and still not having any of it! screaming and standing in the cot.

TBH I dont know how to do pu/pu - because as soon as i get her she quietens down, i lay her back down and she screams.. am i meant to hold her for ages until she is dozy?? because tbh she just squirms and wriggles about so it is hard...

TIA

Kerry

Kerry I think your DD is UT for her PM nap. You are definitely heading for the 2-1. She sounds like her sleep needs may be quite diff to your DS.

You have a few options...you can either cap her AM nap at 45mins or so. This will make her more tired for her PM nap. Or you can push out that AM nap over time so that she is napping late morning and for as long as she like with a CN in the late PM.

I think it looks like she needs that AM nap capped at 45mins to start with and see if she will take a PM nap. You will need to watch her for sleepy cues as because her nap is shorter she may be more tired quicker. Though in your case it may be that she is tired enough to take her nap at the usual time.

So I would try something like this for 3 days and see how things are
WU 7
Nap 45mins at 9
Nap at ~1.00 though you may need to PD earlier or later depending on her cues. Let he nap as long as she likes.
BT after your usual A time after a good PM nap. Maybe 4 hours after WU ie 7 if you get a 2hr pm nap.

What do you think? :-*
