Night wakings in 11mo getting worse!
« on: August 09, 2011, 16:21:35 pm »
Please please help. My lo is nearly 11months old and for the last two weeks has been waking in the night. She has always been an excellent sleeper and slept through from 8 weeks. The only thing we can think of that has changed is that two weeks ago she learnt to both roll and crawl. This affected her naps big time as unless she was asleep/nearly asleep she would roll and crawl back on her hands into sitting, where stuck she would cry. I tried to put her back on her back and she'd do the same getting more and more frustrated and tired. This over the last few days has been getting slightly better as i've let her have a little cry and then she goes off herself (found her on her tummy asleep, although normally she sleeps on her back). The biggest problem is the night wakings. I'm on my knees as she will wake several times a night and if she has had a good chunk of sleep she is so wide awake she wont go back off for two hours (rolling crawling in her cot and crying if you leave the room). When it first started we would find her sitting in her cot (supposedly stuck) but now she's lying down when we go in but is still waking and crying. I've tried PUPD but that doesn't stop her waking on average four times a night. She is off her food (probably teething) so we have been giving a small bottle of 4oz but sometimes she doesn't drink this which makes me think she's not hungry. I took her to the dr's today and she's been given a clean bill of health. We sometimes give pain relief but more often then not she goes back to sleep without any. Here is a typical day in the last two weeks:

7.00am wake, 5oz bottle
8.00am breakfast (has refused this the last 4 days)
9.45/10.00am nap (1 hour average)
12.00 Lunch
2.00pm 5oz bottle
2.30pm nap (half an hour to an hour if lucky)
5.00pm tea
6.30 half a bottle, bath etc
7.00pm other half of bottle and bed (this is earlier by half an hour if she's had a bad afternoon nap)
7.45 wake up (often shushed back easily)
9.00pm wake up (same)
10.00 or 11.00/11.30 (slighly more angry by now, sometimes we give a bottle here, she can be awake for a while)
2.00-3.30 (this is the big one where she will take two hours to get back to sleep and is wide awake chatting/pointing etc.

We really feel this has now become a habit and don't know what to do. She has been a good sleeper so must be able to self settle. We keep the lights off, put her down when she stops crying etc etc. But how can we stop her waking?! People keep saying let her cry it out/use controlled crying and i'm so tired i'm considering it. I think with PUPD she's learnt that if she cries she gets picked up, if she stops she gets put down. Any suggestions will be much appreciated. Thanks for reading (long post i know)  :(

I was going to say that you started the 2-1 http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=163278.0, but I am not seeing a lot of sleep during your day.  I am thinking you  either need to push that first A out a bit and see if you can get a longer 1st nap or push the nap a bit and cut it short to aim for a longer 2nd nap.  I take it you are not getting a good 2nd nap?  When that was happening to us, we had to cut the morning nap.

That last A is too long and is probably what is causing all of those NWs close to bedtime.

Hiya, thanks for replying! Was starting to lose hope! I struggle to put her down any later as she is already visibly tired by 9.30 and i start the process around or just after then because it can take such a long time to settle her. i know she's tired and not going down UT. She has slept through the last two nights but both nights she's had a real crying session going down (last night she was sick from crying so hard). She has struggled with that last nap for a long time now and wakes up crying suggesting she needs more sleep not less? I really don't know how to help her. if i put her down earlier in the afternoon she has just the same amount of sleep but then has even longer until bedtime. I'm too scared to cut the first nap (which is sometimes less than an hour anyway!) incase she doesn't make up for it later (which has happenend several times before!). I know because of her night wakings she is constantly OT, although i've been hoping that the last two nights may have helped. She's sitting on my lap yawning away now!

What are her tired signs?  How long has she been at this nap time?  A lot of LOs show signs at a set time, because it is what they are used to.  You are staying it is still a fight getting her down though?  I would slowly push that A to 3.5 hours and either offer a 45 minute nap and then a longer nap later or a longer nap and a cat nap later.

That last A can really effect nights and it is so long that it is causing disruption.

She yawns a bit and will often put her head down when she's sitting/crawling for a little rest! A month or so ago i altered her nap times as suggested by someone on this board as i was still putting her down at 9.30 and then giving her two little naps later. This worked really well until these last 3 weeks when she's been fighting every nap and sleep time! I think this started as a result of her learning to roll and crawl as it happened pretty much on the same day and hasn't been right since! Before i was wrapping her up wide awake, puttting her down and leaving the room- she would then drift off happily on her own! But she has done a complete u turn not wanting to be left alone to sleep. We tried last night to let her self settle after reassurance and she got so worked up she was sick :( I wondered intially if it was SA but she is great in the day (i can leave her in a room or with familiar friends/family without batting an eye lid). It's just so confusing! On the up side, she has been sleeping through the last three nights, but i can't work out what has changed. They're very confusing these babies! ???

They are tough little critters. ;)  Glad she is sleeping through.  Did a tooth pop through?  That always causes SA for us at night time.
