Possibly UT NW, but not sure--can you help?
« on: August 22, 2011, 13:08:01 pm »
Since starting BW about three weeks ago, my difficult sleeper, Emma, of my nearly 10-month old twins has been doing MUCH better, for which I am very grateful.

I feel like we are slipping a little bit lately, though, and want to nip this in the bud. Last night we had a 2-hour long NW from 3:30 until 5:30am--UGH! And the past three nights she has been very resistant to going to bed, which is making me think UT. BUT her total amount of hours sleeping in a 24 period has been about 12.5 to 13 to maybe 13.5 hours; that doesn't seem like too much too me.

Her usual EASY:
7am-wake up, breastfeed (bf)
8am: breakfast: oatmeal/pears/yogurt
9:30-11: nap
11: bf
12:30: lunch: chicken vegetable stew, bread
2:00-3:30 or 4: nap
4: bf
6:dinner: red lentil soup/strawberries
7: bf / bedtime routine

When things were going well, she was going down to sleep easily and sleeping until 4am or 5am, then waking up for a quick nurse and back to bed until 7am. Lately, she's been waking up to nurse at 2 or 3 and up for at least an hour or longer.

Last night she seemed sleepy right after her bfing at 3:30am; when I put her down and slipped out of the room she was asleep. She woke up in about 8 minutes, though, and was fussing. We went back and forth like that for about 30 min, and then she got really mad and starting screaming and really upset, and wouldn't settle until I picked her up. Then she really woke up and basically wanted to play when I had settled her down again by sitting with her on my lap. At this point I wondered if it was teething pain (she doesn't have ANY teeth yet!) and gave her tylonel.

Finally we went back to her crib and she had a little scream in her crib (I was with her, repeating our sleep phrase, but she was going nuts). She wouldn't settle until I picked her up, sang her a bedtime song, and lay her back down, singing. She had one more fuss and then was finally asleep by 5:30 again. And then wide awake and happy at 7am!

I was wondering if it was either teething pain, and she finally settled when the tylonel kicked in, or just UT? Or something else?

A little note: I can't let her get TOO upset in her room because her twin sister is sleeping in the crib beside her, and I really don't want her screams to wake her up. It's a miracle last night she wasn't disturbed.

Anyone?

So last night there was, thankfully, no extended NW. But there was an EW at 4:45am and Emma refused to go back to bed.

Jane,
thanks for the feedback.
I think you're right. Logistically, it would be very difficult to have the girls on different napping routines, so do you think something could work that is 2 one-hour naps a day?

Yesterday they had two 1-hour naps, but last night wasn't a great night. Emma had a big SC at 9pm, then Sophie had one at 11pm and her dad gave her a bottle (I was sleeping on the futon so I didn't know). Then I fed Emma at 3:30am and Sophie wanted to eat again too. Sophie normally sleeps really well and only eats once so I don't know what was going on. Then they were up for the day at 5:45am.

Do you think the short naps made them OT? Should I stick to the new napping schedule today or modify? Am a bit lost.

Thanks, Jane. It is complicated, of course, because there are two--yesterday one was driving the short naps. I'm not "blaming" her, LOL, just reminding myself to be the one to set the schedule.

At any rate, at least today we had good naps--two 1 1/2 hour naps--so maybe they'll be less OT tonight. It is confusing when one night is UT and one night is OT!
