multiple NWs again..will he ever sleep thru the night ??
« on: September 08, 2011, 23:42:38 pm »
Hi ladies..

I have been researching through the posts on BW forums for more than 6 months now and started sleep training my DS(17mnths now) using GW method. He had slept though the night ( 7 - 8 hrs) only on few occassions and was mostly rocked to sleep from birth. Using GW, I have managed to teach him a little bit to sleep independently. I am now at the stage where I put him down sleepy but awake and then pat the mattress for him to fall asleep. I started seeing improvements from step 2 itself..when I was putting him down almost asleep and then patting in bed. He was sleeping for 9 hrs at night before waking up, alternating with 1 shhort NW at the max. However over the past week, I have had constant NWs 2 or 3 , with the last 2 nights he woke up for almsot 6 times every 2 hrs or so. I should add here, that hes also used to night feeding, i m working on weaning this at the moment. I had some success with this and I used to feed him only after 5.30 which was pretty close to his wake up time. But suddenly hes become hysterical if he doesnt get a feed when he wakes up in the middle of the night close to 12.30 or 1 am and cries and cries. The milk does seem to staisfy him(around 100-150 ml) but he will still keep getting up every hour or so. It could be his teeth and I am giving him teething meds since yesterday..but I am really not sure if it is his teeth. Hes fine during the day and naps are good (2 - 2.5 hrs).. Do I need to cut down his nap?? Or try a later/earlier bedtime??  Open to suggestions. Thanku so much....

Routine

6.30 - 7.15 - Wake up
8 am - breakfast
9.30 - snack
11.15/11.30 - lunch
12.30 - 3 - nap
3.30 - snack
6.00 - dinner
7.20 - bath and change
7.45 - milk
8.00 - bedtime...i start reading stories and then rocking him for @ 5 - 10 mins , putting him down sleepy and then patting the mattress. On a good night..the entire process takes around 30 mins ..it might stretch to 1 hr if hes not calm enough or needs to burn more energy. So its anytime between 8.30 - 9 pm that he falls asleep.

Hi there...

It could well be teeth causing the issue, does he have his canines through yet? My DS is a little older than yours but it was around 17/18mths that his canines started coming through & they do tend to cause sleep issues. We did a meds dream feed in the early hours which made a big difference.

It does also sound like he is also OT from the NW's so you might want to bring his nap a bit earlier to help him get caught up a bit (try midday). His BT is a little late, I would be aiming to have him asleep by around 8pm-ish.

Does this help?

Hi Sianne,

So sorry..i hve been sick for the past few days..hence couldnt follow up on the post..It could b teethin..i think his molars and premolars are popping thru at the same time..I cant do a meds dream feed cos he hates that..i tried once and ended up getting the medicine on the carpet and his bed as he spat all out v unhappy in his sleep :(. I will try getting the nap earlier..so u r saying 12.00 - 2.30 Nap and 8 pm bedtime?? WIll try for that and see what changes..

hes waking up almost every night now between 12.00 - 12.30pm and will wake up only for 10 -15 mins and usually if caught at the right moment..will go back to sleep immediately with a few pats. do u think this is out of habit.. should i try W2S?? he will then wake up lil later and will require a feed between 2 - 3 pm. and then again sometime betwenn 5-6 am.so around 3 NWs and i might get 1 which exceeds 1 hr..so it becomes pretty tiring..do u think i need to tackle the feeding thing right now or wait till the teething pain goes away??

bex09..hows C doing?? any luck with her NWs??

thanks ladies for taking the time to look @ my post.. :)

It does sound like a teeth/OT combination so yes I would aim for a midday nap (hopefully for 2hrs) & then BT for 7.30pm.

If it's his molars or canines coming through then they can cause sleep issues, even if he hasn't really been bothered by teething before. All you can do is give meds (use ibuprofen based meds rather than paracetamol ones as they are more effective for teething).
