What's Wrong Here?
« on: September 20, 2011, 16:19:03 pm »
I can't figure out what's going on!  My son is 20 weeks and we have been having terrible nights.  Things have never been great, but last night went like this:

bed at 7, fell asleep independently
awake at 9:30, a little pat and he was back asleep
awake at 10:20, fed him
awake from 12:15-1:30, with PU/PD he would fall asleep for a bit and then wake five minutes or so later,
awake at 1:45-2:30, again PU/PD
awake at 2:45, fed him
awake for morning at 6:50, talking happily

We have been doing PU/PD for a while and don't rock him or nurse him to sleep.  He takes two naps plus a cat nap and is on a 4 hr easy (pretty much the schedule Tracy has in the book).  I'm just not sure what I'm missing here?  We don't seem to be getting any progress with the PU/PD, so I wonder if there's something I'm doing wrong?  We need more sleep!!

We don't rock and have been very aware of props from the beginning...no feeding to sleep.  The only one could be the paci.  We are trying to help him find his fingers, so we've been swaddling with one hand closer to his mouth.  He sucks the paci a bit, loses it, then goes for the fingers.  Maybe this is keeping him up?

Maybe teeth, too?  Seems so soon!  Last night was a little better:
bed at 7:15
awake at 10:00, fed him
awake at 1:00 PU/PD asleep off and on, asleep at 1:45
awake at 2, fed him
awake at 5, fed him
he woke up at 7.

I didn't want to feed him at 2 because I know it would mean he'd be up before 7, but I couldn't seem to stretch him out much longer.

Sure - our EASY is somewhat like this:
wake at 6:45/7
E 7:00
A until 8:45
S 9:00-?  some days just 45 minutes, some days 2 hrs.  Will do PU/PD so he naps at least 1 1/2 hr
E 11:00
A until 12:40 (maybe earlier, depending on first nap)
S 1:00-3:00 (again, will do PU/PD if he wakes early and is crabby)
E 3:00
A until 4:50
S 5:00-5:30/5:40 (I do rock him to sleep for this nap - the others are independent, but I know he needs this one and the toddler needs dinner, so I AP)
A bedtime routine (which isn't as structured as it could be, but is hard being the only one home some nights)
E 7:00 and in bed (still awake, self soothes to sleep)

Last night he slept soundly from 7-10 and then woke for a DF, woke again at 1:15 and was restless until I fed him at 2:15.  He woke at 4, ate, and back to bed until 7.  Morning nap wasn't too great but he slept for a good 2 hrs this afternoon and had a nice cat nap.  He went down very easily tonight for bed.  We'll see what the evening brings!

Update - he slept soundly from 7-11 and then was up from 1-2:30/45 restless.  I fed him and he slept just until 4 and woke restless again until 4:45.  I caved, fed him, and had to wake him at 7.  The good afternoon nap seemed to only help the 7-11 sleep cycle.

I think that's what I'll do tonight, but it concerns me to give him meds when I'm not sure if it's the problem.  Wouldn't he be bothered during the day, too, if it were teeth?  He is such a happy camper and he seems too little for teeth!

I tried to investigate around his mouth tonight and I think I did see something coming...but not the usual teeth I'd expect!

We had a great day of naps and he ate really well, so if we have more NW I can rule out OT or hungry.  Last night he did skip a 4am wake up that he'd started for a few days, so perhaps we're on our way out of the worst.  Thanks for the advice and checking the EASY.  I felt we were on track too, with the daytime schedule.  We'll see what the night brings.  It's so hard not to AP him to sleep...but I know in the long run we're better off for it.

This is sounding just like my LO who's the same age! The sleep deprivation is terrible, isn't it! I've heard that babies this age change the way they sleep and start to fully wake up after each cycle, so they need to learn to resettle themselves otherwise they wake everyone up. I'd love to know how to get over this stage too... PU/PD seems to just make my LO wild, so I've not been using it.
