Feed refusal getting worse
« on: October 31, 2011, 20:25:20 pm »
DD has never been an easy baby to feed, she has always taken such a small amount but as her weight is fine no one seems to think this is an issue. She is over 5 months old now and will only take 3-4oz per feed sometimes its 2oz! As background she is lactose intolerant and possibly cows milk intolerant and is currently on Neocate formula (after trying a few others). We switched to stage 3 teats a month or so back and she was doing fine on them.

The problem we have now is that this past week she is just flipping out if we try and feed her. As soon as the teat touches her lip she throws herself back, arches her back and screams BUT does her hungry cough like cry at the same time. Its like she wants it but cant stand it at the same time. My firts thought was maybe she has a sore mouth but no signs of thrush or anything and the dummy goes in no problem so that wouldnt make sense. Ive had to resort to putting the dummy in to calm her then whipping it out and quickly putting the bottle in so she will suck a few times before moving it out with her tongue and repeat the whole thing again. ::) As the week has gone on she seems to be getting worse, her first feed of the day never goes well as she always takes such a little amount first thing but this morning it took an hour to get her just to take 1oz!! Then it was 5hrs later before I could get her to take anything else.

Due to the small oz intake she still goes about 3hrs between feeds (day and night ::)) sometimes 4 if we're lucky. She still has 2 night feeds, one usually before midnight and the other 3-4am ish. I just dont know how to solve this one it seems she will never take a large amount and without that will NEVER sleep through :-\ and this new refusual problem is just worrying me. I thought she may be teething but no other signs yet but surely she wouldnt like the dummy either as its same as bottle teat really?

I have to say it does sound like teething to me - have you tried putting teething gel on her gums before you feed her?

It sounds like pain to me too. I know a lot of pacifiers have different shapes than many bottle nipples/teats.

Agree about pain meds. BTW, if you do teething gel, approach it with caution, especially if you have a Touchy one. Josie literally startled at teething gel, and when I put some on my gums I saw why - it's quite an odd sensation. LOL She did eventually take to it, but we couldn't uee the strong stuff at all till she was older. But pain meds for sure, can't hurt (no pun intended LOL) to give them a try, maybe 15-20 minutes before a feed.

Has she taken the Neocate before without problems/protest?

Does your DD have reflux?

I wondered at this too as apparently it is a really horrible taste and wondered if that is why she is refusing it.

Exactly what I was going to ask! Her behaviour during feeds sounds just like my DD at her worst. Have a look here http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=654.0

What do you think?

Just got some bonjela today actually with the thought of doing just that. Ill try it tomorrow...

Yes shes been on Neocate for months now with no problems apart from the low intake. She was on Nutromigen before that now that was nasty!! Its smelt like manure god knows what it tasted like she didnt take to it at all and was switched to Neocate (which always smells like vinegar to me :-\)

Yes she has reflux, she is on infant gaviscon for this. Well they 'think' she has reflux. Even with all of this she is still sick a LOT. She has been great up until now anyway and hasnt displayed the usual back arching and screaming etc (ds had all of this too but was undiagnosed)

Everytime Im on here I look up the girls from our due date thread and I always see that babies of the same age are taking 7-8 oz bottles and wonder how my little Mia survives on her tiny 2oz. She has no interest in solids, have tried a couple of things but completely not interested. Normally you look for draining bottles but as she takes so little will she ever be ready?? Actually this is veering abit off topic isn;t it. Might do a new post.

If she is teething that could well be making her reflux worse - it usually does. I would take her back to see the Dr and see if you can get some meds to try for a couple of weeks at least. Her feeds are way too small - you are right to be thinking she should be taking way bigger bottles by now.
