Do you wake them up?
« on: December 15, 2011, 20:21:00 pm »
Okay, I have a poorly sleeping toddler and now a new baby.  I want to do it right this time, so I stard reading BW, and implementing the techniques for new baby.

I think I might have read it too quick or my brain is jumbled, but I can't find info on whether or not at 8 weeks you should wake them in the morning to begin the day or if they nap past the 3 hour easy, you should wake them. My 8 weaker is sometimes a great napper and will sleep after 1.25 of A and sleep for almost three hours, which would throw the schedule off.

Are you supposed to wake them to keep the 3 hour easy?

Hi and welcome to BW :)

How many naps and how much total day sleep is your LO getting (when you add all the naps together) and how much night sleep?
I'm just wondering if your LO prefers maybe 2 v long naps rather than 3 naps and a CN (cat nap), so a little more info might be useful.

Meanwhile, if LO is happy and your nights are not messed up (obviously there will be night feeds at this age, normal, by messed up I mean if she is awake all night and has switch day/night) then just for now I'd say leave her to sleep.  She will wake when she is hungry and may be prioritising sleep over food knowing that the food will be there when she wakes.  EASY is a routine so that LO and parents know what is coming next, it is not intended to be a strict timed schedule.  If there are problems developing though then waking up might be the answer.

Thank you.
Right now I would guess about 7 hours a day of day sleep.  He sleeps three 2 hour naps, though the afternoon one is closer to 2.5 hours and may be more, but I have woken him.  Then one cn for and hour in the evening.  He probably sleeps 12 hours at night, with two feedings.

It's just a little above the higher end of what can be expected.

15 -18hrs total day and night sleep is normal, so 19hrs is perhaps just a slightly higher sleep need.  You will see from the link that a newborn can sleep up to 20hrs per day, you might find he reduces those naps a little over the next few weeks or you might learn he is slightly higher sleep needs and adapt his EASY to suit him.
A happy baby, sleeping well, is the dream - you got it :)

Like I said, if problems arise you need to re-look at it.
If you wanted you could try putting him down for that long nap (2.5hr to 3hr nap) just slightly earlier, this would (theoretically) mean he is not as tired so will sleep less.

Here's a link which is handy to keep on track of the increasing A times by age, but each LO is an individual of course so if you LO likes a little more sleep or needs a slightly shorter A before the afternoon nap then you will adapt to allow for his needs.
