Please help!!! Baby waking every 1-2hrs at night....
« on: November 30, 2011, 13:54:38 pm »
Someone please help!!!!  My baby is almost 5 months old is waking every 1-2hrs at night.  He has been on the 4 hour EASY routine for 2 months.
E-10-20min
A-1.5hrs
S-1-2hrs
He has reflux and has been on meds but I thought they were constipating him ( has not had a bowel movement in over 1 week) so I recently took him off of the Ranitidine (didn't seem to help anyways).  For the first few months he was sleeping with me or in his swing. He started waking every 2-3hrs so 3 weeks ago we transitioned him to his crib (with an elevated mattress).  The transition seemed to go well and he actually slept for 3-4hrs at a time (this only lasted 2 nights).  Due to his reflux the doctor suggested feeding him smaller amounts more frequently which I tried but now I am feeding him every 3-4hrs to try and help with the night sleeping (I thought maybe he was getting used to feeding every 1-2hrs and that was why he was waking so frequently at night).  He naps really well during the day...falls asleep within 10 minutes.  At night he falls asleep pretty easily but does not stay asleep.  We use the shush/pat.  We are using a paci but he ends up spitting it out and usually remains asleep.  He goes to bed around 7 with a bedtime routine (feed, bath, story time).  I have tried the following:

Upping his feeds during the day (in case it is a hunger problem).
Shortening his naps.
Keeping his activity to a minimum in the evening (no jolly jumper past 3pm).

I don't know what else to do....I am giving him Camilia for teething (as I thought maybe he was in pain).  He is generally a happy baby.  He wakes up babbling which eventually turns into a cry. I try and wait to see if he will self soothe but never does.  We swaddle him but he always gets 1 arm out.

Hi and welcome to the boards. :)

I think that the frequent NW may well be down to the reflux. Is your DS not on any medication for it now? I think if it is untreated then this could well be causing him to wake so frequently. What do you think?

If you are not happy with the ranitadine maybe a trip back to the docs could help and see if there is an alternative? My DD also suffered with constipation and was on ranitadine (don't know if it was linked though) and the docs gave me a laxative for use when she got bunged up.

Thank you for your reply....yes I think that it is probably due to his reflux because he looks so uncomfortable...pulling his knees up to his chest and grimacing (while trying to sleep).  I just hate giving him meds but he should probably go back on (he has been off them for 4 days and still no bowel mov't so maybe not linked).  Should i keep him in the crib or try the swing again?  i just don't want these last 3 weeks in the crib to go to waste if i move him back to sleeping upright (although he was still waking frequently in the swing).  I am so confused and running on 3-4hrs sleep/night.

It is so tricky with reflux babies to avoid prop dependancy as their sleep can be so bad. Personally I would get DS properly medicated first and see if he can stay in the crib (elevated) once on the meds. I know what you mean about not liking to give meds, but reflux is so painful for LOs he really will need them.

As for the constipation have you tried giving a little prune juice mixed with water to drink? This can often get things moving. Failing that I would talk to your doc about what can be done.
