Problems with lettuce?
« on: December 03, 2011, 08:28:40 am »
Have any of you ladies noticed a reaction in your LOs to lettuce?!

Reason I ask is that yesterday pm and all night poor old DD has been struggling with trapped wind. I've also been quite windy myself  (we're a right pair -  I can still feel every movement of gas or solid through the last part of my bowel and it hurts!!!)

I had lettuce in my sandwich for lunch yesterday. Reason I suspect it is that I had a colonic treatment last year and the lady told me that lettuce is from the same family as cabbage and can cause gas and bloating.

Lettuce and cabbage aren't even remotely related. Cabbage and other brassicas can indeed cause a lot of gas, but lettuce is a green that's usually fine to eat raw.

I'd be more inclined to blame either the bread, a condiment, or something else on the sandwich, although it's not out of the realm of possibility that the lettuce might have done it. any issues with it before?

But no, it's NOT a brassica/crucifer.

Here's a veg list with the different kinds of veg and greens broken down: http://www.raw-food-health.net/listofvegetables.html#axzz1fTZ8Safp

Thanks Deb - it was smoked salmon and cream cheese - with cherry tomatoes on the side - it could be coincidence too and maybe she's just getting into her stride feeding and took on too much at once? No problems so far at other times when I've had bread - I guess time and trial and error will tell

I actually always heard of lettuce as a way to get rid of bloating- and always works for me.
Have you been eating more dairy recently?

Tomatoes are nightshades, although my reaction to them (I'm one of the sensitive people) is more inflammatory than gut-related.

and the cream cheese could be it as well. Many cream cheeses have additives, so even if you're OK with most dairy, you might not be with the additives. When Nat was a baby I was dairy-free while BFing so I drank rice milk - turned out she was reacting to the carageenan in the brand I was using.
