New Nap Location and Catnaps
« on: December 11, 2011, 02:49:08 am »
We're trying to transition DS from napping in the pnp in our family room to naps in his crib. it's been about a month and it's not going well, he won't sleep more than 30-45 min and sometimes extending the nap, if it even works, takes up to an hour.

DS wakes up happy but with bags under his eyes so I know he's still tired. Thing is, sometimes he's more interested in playing and smiling at me than being resettled. He's 5.5 months and sort of on a 4 hour easy. I don't know what to do to help him and he's chronically OT due to all of the short naps.

We're working on removing rocking as a prop and I know that plays into it but I don't know how much because he naps great in the family room and at daycare. Just not at home in his crib. Anyone deal with something similar?

Thanks elmarie :)

It was the same thing all weekend, only 30 minute naps in his crib and he would not resettle no matter what.  I caved and let him nap once each day in the family room and he went over 2 hours each time.  Maybe it’s time to just be happy that he sleeps and worry less about where he sleeps.

Is napping in the family room a problem?  Are other members of the family able to continue their usual activities or do they have to stay quiet during nap time? (I'd consider this a problem)

If there are no problems and if he is happy in his cot at night then, if it was me, I'd just let him sleep in the pnp for naps.  Maybe he is used to the general hub bub and background noise of the family room and day care where it is not total silence to sleep.  It might be that during transition he comes a little out of sleep hears the comfort of the people around him and it makes him feel secure to continue sleeping.

If it is a problem then that's a different matter.
Have you tried white noise?  A radio?  A CD player?

Hmm, it’s not too much of a problem.  The reason we started trying to transition is because we had to lower the pnp mattress and that threw him off a bit.  I figured if we were going to be transitioning at all we might as well do so to the crib to avoid having to do it later.

He will wake during a nap in the family room if there’s more than the typical amount of noise, especially during the transition time, like if we have company over on the weekend or the dog starts barking but otherwise he can sleep through our typical amount of noise.

We use music when he goes down in the crib (it's successful at BT) but it only runs for 20 minutes and he wakes soon after that which I’ve been wondering about.  I might try finding a noise machine that doesn’t have a timer or heck, maybe he’ll just go back to napping in the family room.

Thanks, Creations, we’ll see how he did with MIL today.  This morning I told her to return to napping in the family room to see how it goes.

Re music.  Can you set a CD player on repeat and just keep it running throughout the nap?
TBH I have no idea if music is considered a prop or not but I know a lot of people use white noise and it doesn't seem any different to me.
If you want white noise (or pink noise or brown noise for that matter) you can get it free or very cheaply off the internet, burn to CD then set to repeat on a CD player.  I only suggest a CD player (for music or white noise) as it's something that your LO can get more use out of rather than a noise machine which only has one function iyswim.
