i have the flu and i think my milk supply is gone!! HELP!!
« on: December 27, 2011, 03:02:26 am »
hi. i got the flu yesterday morning and have been vomiting and have had diarrhea off and on. i can't seem to keep anything down. i'm trying my best to drink plenty of water, but i even throw that up somtimes. i haven't peed all day today and my 5 month lo seems to be upset during feedings. what do i do to keep my milk flowing? i'm currently eating a bowl of oatmeal very slowly, but am afraid i'll just see it again in an hour or so. oh, and i have no EBM, she's never taken a bottle, i don't think i even have bottles anymore.

(((hugs))) sweetie
Feed as much as humanly possible.  I had a stomach flu when ds was 3 weeks old and he literally stayed in bed with me attached to my boob for much of the night one night so I knew he was getting something.  Also, find (or make) some sort of oral rehydration solution (like Pedialyte) to try to keep from getting dehydrated.  For me, the liquids were way more important than solids.  Take lots and lots of little sips of water and rest up as much as you can.

thanks, erin. i'm following your advice and doing lots of liquids in small amounts. have also just taken some pepto bismol since having diarrhea 20 times in the past 12 hours (!!!) and i'm praying that helps. poor lo doesn't know what hit her... my let down is super slow and super weak and she is terribly frustrated. i am too and try not to cry cuz i don't want my tears to dehydrate me further!

(((hugs))) it should be away in 3 days- everyone, except me, had it in our house and the stomach/diarrhea part of it didn't last that long. Look after yourself.
Xx

Immodium is better than Pepto if you have it.  Hang in there!  You should be through the worst of it soon if you're not already.
