Hi,

We have had problems with nws for weeks now.  I've just gone with the flow as LJ had a cold, then was teething and now has both! LAst week we decided enough is enough and with a little bw research decided to tweak the routine - making sure that LJ has longer between waking from her last nap and going to bed.  It seemed to work for a couple of nights but we did get an ew on one of those (the night before last - 5am!).  Last night she woke at about 1am (her teeth were off - cutting one at the moment) and then again at 5.15am.  She wouldn't settle again and we ended up getting up with her again.

Anyone got any thoughts on these ews? They are killing me and it's starting to get me down!

Routine as follows:

- wake up, breakfast, milk, get ready, play - total of about 3 hours A time!
- Milk feed & bed
- 3 hours A time
- Milk feed & bed
- A time before bed
- 5.30pm - dinner and then usually in the bath which begins her bedtime routine. Trying now (as a result of the nws) to leave 3 -3.5 hours between last nap and bedtime.

LJ's naps are usually between 1 hour 10 and 2 hours.  Yesterday (when we got the night wakings and the ew) she had about an hour for her 1st one and 2 hours 10 for her 2nd!

Have been bWing since LJ was 6 weeks old but it's gone a little to pot in that she naturally is now having milk before she goes down.  Not always but most of the time! Just the way it works.

Would really appreciate some advice,

Snowbird xxx

Hi there, there are a few things that could be going on here. Firstly, for us teething often causes EW. Once the meds have worn off and DD comes into a light sleep around 5am it is as if she is in too much discomfort to settle again. If you think this is the issue then some people give a dream meds dose.

Also looking at your EASY your DD's A times of 3 hrs are quite short for her age. Most 11 mo would be doing around 3.5 hrs of A time. Do you think she would cope with you adding more A time on? If so then you could try slowly increasing this by adding 10 or 15 mins every few days. I would avoid making big jumps in A times to avoid OT, but a slow increase could well stop the EW once you are up to 3.5 hrs.

You might find that if you increase A times that your DD's day gets longer than the normal 12 hrs. You may have to start capping one nap a little to stick as close to 12 hrs as you can. You could well be in the very early stages of 2:1 transition, this often starts with NW and EW. Have you seen this link?... http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=163278.0

Thank you Bex - that sounds great! Not sure I'd get a dream meds down her but otherwise sounds good.

Did extend her awake time today anyway and she had 2 x 1 hour naps. Her A time was about 3 hours 25 this morning and 3.5 hours this afternoon. Didn't seem tired this afternoon but she sometimes doesn't until she's curled up in her gro bag. She went off on her own after a little time with Teddy and had an ok nap. Will see how tonight goes and definitely follow your advice tomo.

Watch this space :) xxX

Sounds good, keep us posted. Bear in mind it may well take up to a week of being consistent with the longer A times to see any difference, so as long as you are not getting OT short naps then stick with it. As for the dream meds, we never did this either, just a suggestion as some Mums find it works really well. We just used to give pain meds at the EW if she was upset and then stay with DD in her room until she settled again, usually in about 30mins, once the meds started working. Fingers Xd for a good night for you.
