No dream feed = super hungry in the morning / bad naps?
« on: February 27, 2012, 20:55:22 pm »
My 11 week old DD has always been pretty good at night and generally sleeps 8pm-8am, usually with an early morning feed at 5am, sometimes one at 2am.  She never cries at night and seems to only wake for food... However, she's not great at napping during the day...

I've never done a dream feed (seems crazy to wake her when she's so good at night) but I've been wondering whether if this makes her too hungry in the morning and then sets up her for cluster feeding early in the day and subsequently daytime naps are a struggle.

I'm loathed to start dream feeding in case it wakes her too much and changes her from being so good at night!

Any thoughts?

Hi, the DF for us seemed to work pretty well - and the baby doesn't really wake up all the way (at least that's the goal).  My daughter did well with it and would start to nurse right away and then go right back to sleep.  My son sometimes wouldn't wake and it was hard to find the time that he was just passing through sleep cycles.

It's worth a shot for one night, and if it's a disaster then you know it won't work for you!

So you're worried that doing a DF will make her want to eat more in the morning?

No I'm worried that because she generally goes so long overnight she's then super hungry in the mornings and then cluster feeds making it difficult to get on a 3 hour easy?

And I'd be nervous to disturb her for a dream feed in case it ruins her STTN!

About how many feeds is she doing in a 24 hour period?  What does your EASY look like now?  There could be lots of reasons for bad naps, let's see of we can sort out the reason!

Also at 11w, chances are that she will still be feeding fairly frequently anyway and often naps don't come together for another few weeks anyway.  You also have a growth spurt coming up any time now, which may or may not affect her night sleep too.

I'd agree with pp - I know your hesitation to change something when STTN is already happening!!
