How long at night
« on: March 02, 2012, 18:54:47 pm »
Hi,
Just wondering how long at night your LO is awake during a night feeding? From the moment they wake to the moment they are asleep.

My DD is 6 weeks old and it takes us 1.5 hours from initial wake to finally going back to sleep (nursing, burping, rocking, gas pains,). I am up most nights from 2:30-4:00. Is this normal????

Thanks!

Hi there, I wouldn't think that a feed taking that long was usual. Is you LO FF or BF? If you let me know we can move this over to bottle feeding or breast feeding for some more expert eyes on feeding.

Seeing as the NF and most of your others are BF hun, I am going to pop this over to Breast Feeding and see if we can get you some help over there. :)

In the early weeks with my DD1 it would have took an hour to feed but it did even out.  Looking back though a lot of it was comfort sucking.

How long does it take her to feed during the day?

One thing that did help me was to feed in bed lying down and then letting DH take over and resettle her to sleep.

Does she usually get gas pains like that during the day?  Is what you do at night the same as your daytime routine for feeding or does it take much longer?

I tried to really pay attention to it last night and I think the problem is more her inability to feed and go right back to sleep. The feeding takes about 25 min, same as during the day, add about 5 minutes of burping. That leaves almost an hour it takes her to go back to sleep.

Last night, was better, I did the shh/pat and she was asleep within 25 minutes. AND, the gas pains were much less. Funny thing is, typically I take frequent breaks when nursing to burp her and last night I did not, and the gas was much less.

I guess I thought that a night feeding would be feed and put back to bed without such a big production of getting back to sleep.

The burping was a key with all of mine...and I wouldn't do it in the beginning because I was sure that since it was the nighttime, they weren't taking in as much air and I didn't have to worry.  ::)  And once I realized that I needed to burp and actually did it, they settled much more quickly.

Same here, although DD would often drop off during the feed and I'd do a "dream burp"
