Feeding troubles with 10 month old
« on: March 02, 2012, 03:24:26 am »
Hi ladies.  I am back.  We are having some serious feeding issues.  I am not sure that my lo is getting enough when she is nursing.  We have been having troubles with EASY and we still do not have it plus we are all getting over sickness.  I am afraid that my supply is not keeping up with her.  I have noticed that she seems so much more satisfied when we give her EBM in a bottle, but it takes me two pumping sessions to get a bottle of about 6 oz.  I have not had supply problems in the past, but just in the past few weeks.  I have been taking fenugreek and have not noticed much difference.  I have had my husband giver her a bottle of formula at night and he will give her about 7oz before bed and 7oz at DF and she drains them both.  When she nurses she is only on for about 5-10 mins and then is much interested in other things.  We were just at the doctor and she was down in the 10th percentile.  I am not sure if giving formula was the right thing to do.  I really did not want to, but I was unsure how to get more calories in her.  I am not pumping as much now and this worries me.  I am afraid I will have to switch over to formula full time.  Any thoughts?  Also, so most usually wait until 12 months to do solids before milk??

My LO really nurses best at night these days.  She's SO distractible during the day!  IS there a way you could do the pre-bed and DF feeds as BFs?  Also I would take a nursing holiday if you can and just try to do lots of skin to skin and snuggle and nurse, nurse, nurse.  Esp if you're just getting over being sick.

I work a lot and have had supply issues and I'm taking domperidone now, which has been so helpful to my supply. I can tell you more about it if you're interested.

Hi there.  I am very interested in hearing more about it.  I am having trouble finding a Dr. that will write a prescription for it though. You are in the US, right?

Hi again!  The trouble with giving formula is that it tells your body that your baby doesn't need that feed.  Also LOs will often drink more from a bottle than from the breast because it's easier to get and they don't get a "full" signal as early as they do when BFing.

How often are you feeding now?

Yep.  I get it through inhousepharmacy . biz.  Comes from NZ.  It takes a while to get to you but the pricing is reasonable and I've had major increases in my supply with it.

I am feeding every four hours.  WHen she is not at the breast I am pumping though.  If I have to top her up with formula after a bf I also pump.  I know it is not as good, but better than nothing huh??

kmk512-Did you have to have a prescription for it?? How much has your supply increased?  I am talking to my LC about it and she said it was great.  Hopefully I can get my midwife to write a script for it.  I wonder why it is so difficult to get??

I also struggled with not being able to keep up with DS's feeding demands (DS went down to the 3rd pct from 55) so our pediatrician told us to add formula to solids, so that's what we have been doing lately.  My son won't take BM from a bottle so pumping doesn't help either.  I can't say that he has been gaining a lot of weight but he hasn't been losing so I guess that's good? :)
