After 4am .... Only in my arms
« on: March 08, 2012, 04:43:36 am »
My ds is 12wks and has started to go through the night with no feeds, but wakes around 4am and after this will only sleep in my arms. (yes, because I let him after all else has failed!!) could it be that I'm just not letting him try for long enough on his own? Is sleep too light at this Point of the night to do anything apart from doze? Or something else?!  Our day looks like this:

E- 7am
S- 8.15-10 ( with awake of abOut 15 mins between til he falls asleep again)
E- 10.30
S- 11.30-1.15
E- 1.30
S- 3.00 ( long A time but can't get him down any earlier, and will ONLY nap for 30 mins at this time)
E- 4.00
S- 5.30 ( again long A and 30 mins, nothing else)
Bath
E- 6.30
S-  7.00 but sometimes 7.30 depending on how well he settles

He is formula fed 7oz each feed with no DF or NF. (df stopped as encouraged NWs then he started to gradually sleep longer on his own with no NF.
However, he wakes at approx 4am and cannot sleep again in his cot. Tried re-plugging his dummy, wedging on his side, shh/pat but he will only settle in my arms ( happily so I know not hunger)
this does take abou 45 mins for him to fall asleep.  I have to admit that I struggle with shh/pat for this long as goes a bit wild lying in his cot. Am I just being lazy and need to stop picking him up?!!

Any advice, thanks!!

I think he does sound OT by the end of the day which could be making the 4am WU difficult for him to resettle.
Can you PD earier than 5.30 after a 30min nap? If you et a 30min nap at 3 I would go for closer to 4.30, with a slightly earlier BT if he will take it and see if this helps him resettle after 4am. What do you think?

Also, do you think he could be cold or have any discomfort at this NW? Some babies get sore tums around this time in the morning, and also the temp tends to drop...

thanks.... Today was much the same but he took 9oz for his 10.30feed so perhaps a growth spurt coming? Couldn't get him to take his 5pm nap at all so bath and milk earlier tonight. Will see how the night goes, but as I discovered with my DD, if they don't want to sleep then they don't want to sleep!
When I got him back down at 4.45am this morning he only slept for 45mins then awake again! G

And yes, I have thought about the temperature... It's already 22degrees in his room so don't really want to make it much warmer as prob too high for a baby anyway but his cheeks and hands were cold when I went to him.  Not wind, as he does often suffer from it but I know on the nights when this is the case. Am going to try him with an extra oz tmrw morning to see if he perhaps needs more during the day.
