OT???
« on: March 08, 2012, 15:54:58 pm »
If 8 month old only sleeps for 30 minutes for afternoon nap, would you assume this is OT?

A times are right at 3 hours, and DS has morning nap of about 1 hour 25 minutes. Just can't get him to go longer on the afternoon nap! Wakes crying and won't resettle. :( Any ideas?

I would have thought OT or OS, yes, although could be pain, any teething or illness?

It could be that 3hrs is just slightly too long after a 1hr 25 morning nap but fine for the first A after a good night sleep.
You could try cutting back 10 or 15 mins for several days and see what happens?

Thanks for the reply, I'll try to shorten the A time before afternoon nap and see how he does! (No illness or teething issues.)

Yesterday I cut back just a bit and he slept for 1 hour 20 minutes for afternoon nap, so much better. Thanks again for your help! :) Really appreciate it!

Oh that's brilliant!
You might need to reassess after a few days or a week, if he is OT he might catch up you know and then need another tweak?

Good work :)

Okay, I will keep my eye on it and see if we need to push it back out once he's gotten some good rest. It worked again today - 1 hour 20 minutes for both morning and afternoon nap! Huge improvement for my little man.

Can I ask you one more thing? He is waking so early in the morning, and if he were rested, I would say no worries, but he's typically not (he will sometimes go back to sleep if I change his nappy and give him a quick feed, but other times he will just stay awake for ages, not crying)... it's hard to make it through the day on two naps when he wakes at 5am! Do you think these better naps will help with a later wake up or could it be a different issue altogether? He's eating loads, so I don't think he could be THAT hungry. Any thoughts or ideas for me?

Wonderful news on the naps!

I'm afraid I struggled with 5am and 5.30am wake ups until DS was a year old and moved to one nap, he then started sleeping until 7am.  I remember how draining it was and how pleased I felt if he slept as late as 5.45am!
you might find that the better naps help with the EW as he may be more relaxed and able to stay asleep, or he could just naturally be an early riser.
If it is pretty regular time you could try W2S which some people have great success with

I too doubt it would be hunger at 8 months unless there was illness or teething causing him to not eat so good in the day but that would be a temporary thing.
