3 year old incoherently waking and won't fall back
« on: March 28, 2012, 15:25:21 pm »
My daughter who's 3 in a few months has started to have trouble in the night.  In the past when she's woken in the night we've done PUPD (8 months) and WIWO (1 1/2 years) and she's done really well with that.  But recently when she wakes in the night it's as though she's still sleeping but can't calm down.  She thrashes herself around and yells and cries and can't tell us what she wants or what's wrong.  Sometimes she barely opens her eys. The only thing that's helped to calm her down is to give her a bottle of warm rice milk, but clearly I know that's not the answer.  Any thoughts as of how to deal with this inconsolable, irrational child?  Thanks!

Is there any pattern to the wakings? Are they at certain times in the night?

Is she still napping? Do you want to post your routine - WU, nap (time and length, if any) and BT.

Is she toilet trained at night - ds1 does this quite often and it's because he wants a wee but is too sleepy and can't quite find the words - usually after he's been put on toilet and had his wee he goes back to sleep no problem

There is no pattern.  one night is was at eleven, the next at one, and the next at 4:40.
In general her pattern is
Sleep 8 pm to 7:00 am
Nap from 1:30-3:00
We can't change anything about the nap because she's at daycare for it.
Interesting thoughts on potty training.  She is MOSTLY potty trained during the day but not completely yet.  She definitely is not anywhere near potty trained at night.  But I do know that she doesn't like to pee in her diaper in the day if she has one on so maybe I should get her up and go potty and see if that works.
Anything else Catherine?
Thanks!

Might be worth a try - we spent ages trying to figure out what ds1 wanted since it was unusual for him to nw.!

Yes, I've heard the potty thing quite a lot actually, definitely worth a try. I've also heard that it can help with night terrors too, which I did wonder if this was but it doesn't sound like it, especially with those timings.

I'm wondering if she might be OT or UT - any thoughts? Routine-wise, she's still having quite a long nap so it makes me think UT, but the wakings sound more OT to me. Is she settling ok at BT? If she's OT then it might be worth trying an early BT for a few days.

Do you think I should cut her nap to a one hour nap?  I can't change the time of it but I can tell them to cap it.  Is she getting too old for that long of a nap?
Thanks!
ps she IS having some trouble falling asleep at night - more than usual

Yes, possibly try capping it, but you may need to bring BT forward so she's not OT. I still cant decide if I think she's UT or OT. It may be that she's UT at BT because the naps too long, but by the time she falls asleep she's OT and that's what's causing the NWs, she possibly still needs the same amount of sleep but arranged differently, iyswim?

Perhaps try a few days of capping the nap to an hour but having her in bed at 7pm and see what happens?
