Habitual night waking 7 week old?
« on: March 23, 2012, 17:25:33 pm »
Hi, just wondering how young babies are when they start having habitual night wakings?
When DS was 5 weeks, he had 3 nights in a row sleeping 7pm till 4 or 5am, had his 6 week vax and has been going back to waking between 1 and 2 am, then between 4and 5am. Have just started a DF last night, and he woke at 1.30. I put my hand on his tummy and he must have gone back to sleep and woke 3.30am. I am not really sure when and if he is hungry during the night, so I usually feed him.
At what age does one stop feeding during the night? My DS1 I still fed during the night till he was 16 months...

Hi there, at 7 weeks I would be in no doubt that if your DS wakes in the night then he will be hungry. TBH a DF and 2 NFs would still be very normal at this age. If your DS does do longer stretches and only wakes for one NF after the DF then that is fantastic. For now though hun, if he wakes I would feed him. He needs all those calories to support the amazing growth and development that he is going through.

As for when to stop NFs, well every child is different. My DD dropped them herself at 12 weeks and then a month later with the 4 month GS started waking for a feed again. This carried on until 6 mo when she dropped the NF herself again. I always think taking your babies lead on this is the best approach. Once your LO is well established on 3 solid meals a day and doing well (so maybe 7 or 8 months) the NF is probably not 'needed' as such, but that doesn't mean that every baby will have dropped NFs by then. HTHs.

I guess it was really strange that there was a few days where he went for a 9 hour period, and now we are back to a 4-5 hour, then 3-4 hour period during the night. I dont mind, my DS1 didnt sleep through consistently until he was 18 months so am used to it!!

Will keep feeding when he wakes at night. Its a great way to get them back to sleep quickly!!

At this age LOs are still just finding their feet so the NW patterns can change from night to night. Just because they can manage to go for a long stretch one night doesn't mean that they will do it again unfortunately. Frustrating I know, but like you said at least NF settle your DS down quickly. This is another sign that he is hungry, if a feed settles him right back down then that was what he needed.  :)
