How do you know when its time to lose the crib?
« on: March 15, 2012, 19:42:30 pm »
I see there is a sticky on transition success stories but we're not even there yet. My almost 23 month old is sleeping in a crib and seems totally fine with it. How do you know when its time to make the switch?

I kept my DD1 in her cot until she was nearly 3 (it was a toddler crib so plenty of room).  She started to climb out at 2YO and i thought we'd have to make the change then but then she stopped doing that so I left her.  I just moved her as I knew was old enough to not start any up and down out of bed nonsense and the transition went seemlessly.

I intend to keep DD2 in hers as long as possible too!!

Thanks for that response...I have friends whose kids were in their big beds when they were younger than my DD is now so I was just wondering if I should be making the switch. Yet she's not really doing anything to signal to me that she's ready, so maybe not...

I kind of think 'if it aint broke' and all that.

What sort of temperament is she? Would she likely to be up to tricks if she was able to get herself out of bed?

Hi there, my DD is 21 mo and I plan to keep her in her cot as long as possible! She has shown no signs of climbing out yet which is amazing as she climbs everything. I honestly don't think it has occured to her yet and fingers Xd it doesn't start soon. I guess once she can keep climbing out then we will make the switch for safety. My friend put her DS in a BBB at age 2 and had an awful time where he just used to spend hours each evening running around upstairs and shouting down the stairs for her to go and see him. She wished she had left it later, so I will be waiting as long as I can.

Thanks for the replies and sorry I haven't been back sooner.

She's very spirited and I can totally see her climbing out and wrecking havoc in her room. But, I suppose you take that chance at some point, right?

Bex- my DD too is a climber, and I'm surprised she hasn't tried to escape yet either. I don't have bumpers in there - she's too old (I think) and I was afraid she'd use them to make her way out.

I guess we'll wait.
